Giske is an island List of municipalities of Norway, municipality in Møre og Romsdal Counties of Norway, county, Norway. The municipality lies north-northwest of the Ålesund (town), town of Ålesund in the Districts of Norway, traditional district of Sunnmøre. The municipal centre is Valderhaugstrand. Giske Church
Giske Church () is a 12th-century marble parish church of the Church of Norway in Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located on the south side of the island of Giske, about northwest of the town of Ålesund. It is the main church for the Giske parish which is part of the Nordre Sunnmøre prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Møre. The white marble church was built in a long church design in the 12th century using plans drawn up by an unknown architect. The church seats about 125 people. The church is open for guided tours during the summer season. Design The church is built of white marble. The origin of the marble is unclear, but it was brought to the island by boat. Where it came from before that is unknown. Today the walls are covered by chalk on the outside and plaster on the inside, so that the marble is only visible in a few places, all on the outside. Giske Wildlife Sanctuary
The Giske Wildlife Sanctuary () is located in the Makkevika inlet on the island of Giske in Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The area received protection in 1988 "to preserve an important wetland area with its habitat, bird life and other wildlife," according to the conservation regulations. The inlet is a resting place for wetland birds, especially waders, and it is also an important overwintering place and has a strong nesting population. Six of the bird species that have been observed here are of international importance, 21 species are of national importance, and 35 are of regional importance. The landscape consists of varied seaside vegetation with wash margins and salt pans. Beach meadows and ponds lie inland from the beach. A pebble beach is also of geological interest. Bendik Giske is a Norwegian saxophonist and performance artist, living in Berlin. Madeleine Giske (born 14 September 1987) is a Norwegian former footballer who played as a midfielder. She is a member of the Norway women's national football team. Giske is the daughter of Anders Giske, a former professional footballer who captained the Norway national football team, as well as playing for clubs such as SK Brann, 1. Giske Wetlands System
The Giske Wetlands System () is a Ramsar site located in Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It consists of six separate protected areas: two nature reserves and four wildlife sanctuaries. One of the nature reserves lies on the island of Giske and the five other areas are located on the island of Vigra in the same municipality. The areas have been protected as a Ramsar site since 1996 because of their importance for migratory birds. There are large shallow areas with mudflats exposed during low tide. Jorunn Bjørg Giske (28 September 1927 – 21 January 2021) was a Norwegian politician for the Labour Party. Career Giske was born in Giske Municipality to farmer Bjarne Berntsen Giske and Nikoline Valkvæ. She served as deputy representative to the Storting from Møre og Romsdal during the term 1973–1977.
