Giske Wetlands System
The Giske Wetlands System ( no, Giske våtmarkssystem) is a Ramsar site located in the municipality of Giske in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It consists of six separate protected areas: two nature reserves and four wildlife sanctuaries. One of the nature reserves lies on the island of Giske and the five other areas are located on the island of Vigra in the same municipality. The areas have been protected as a Ramsar site since 1996 because of their importance for migratory birds. There are large shallow areas with mudflats exposed during low tide. A lot of seaweed ( Fucales and kelp) accumulates there, providing good conditions for birds in search of food. There are also marshes, damp beach meadows, and swamps in the wetland system. Roald is a village in Giske Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The village is located on the northern part of the island Vigra. Roald is located about north of the city centre of Ålesund. It is connected to the mainland via two undersea tunnels which opened in 1987 (and was extensively upgraded in 2008). Beach Meadows are coastal meadows influenced by the presence of the nearby sea. Under this definition, the salinity of the air and wind is always high and the meadows are often flooded during and after stormy weather. These conditions implies that the flora is dominated by salt-tolerant species. However, that alone does not make a meadow. Kelps are large brown algae seaweeds that make up the order Laminariales. There are about 30 different genera.
