Robert Riley (mathematician)
Robert F. Riley (December 22, 1935–March 4, 2000) was an American mathematician. He is known for his work in low-dimensional topology using computational tools and hyperbolic geometry, being one of the inspirations for William Thurston's later breakthroughs in 3-dimensional topology. Career Riley earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from MIT in 1957; shortly thereafter he dropped out of the graduate program and went on to work in industry, eventually moving to Amsterdam in 1966. In 1968 he took a temporary position at the University of Southampton. He defended his Ph.D. at this institution in 1980, under the nominal direction of David Singerman. For the next two years he occupied a postdoctoral position in Boulder where William Thurston was employed at the time, before moving on to Binghamton University as a professor. Low-dimensional Topology
In mathematics, low-dimensional topology is the branch of topology that studies manifolds, or more generally topological spaces, of four or fewer dimensions. Representative topics are the structure theory of 3-manifolds and 4-manifolds, knot theory, and braid groups. This can be regarded as a part of geometric topology. It may also be used to refer to the study of topological spaces of dimension 1, though this is more typically considered part of continuum theory. Ralph Fox
Ralph Hartzler Fox (March 24, 1913 – December 23, 1973) was an American mathematician. As a professor at Princeton University, he taught and advised many of the contributors to the ''Golden Age of differential topology'', and he played an important role in the modernization and main-streaming of knot theory. Biography Ralph Fox attended Swarthmore College for two years, while studying piano at the Leefson Conservatory of Music in Philadelphia. He earned a master's degree from Johns Hopkins University, and a PhD degree from Princeton University in 1939. His doctoral dissertation, ''On the Lusternick-Schnirelmann Category'', was directed by Solomon Lefschetz. Geometrisation Conjecture
In mathematics, Thurston's geometrization conjecture states that each of certain three-dimensional topological spaces has a unique geometric structure that can be associated with it. It is an analogue of the uniformization theorem for two-dimensional surfaces, which states that every simply connected Riemann surface can be given one of three geometries ( Euclidean, spherical, or hyperbolic). In three dimensions, it is not always possible to assign a single geometry to a whole topological space. Instead, the geometrization conjecture states that every closed 3-manifold can be decomposed in a canonical way into pieces that each have one of eight types of geometric structure. Figure-eight Knot
The figure-eight knot or figure-of-eight knot is a type of stopper knot. It is very important in both sailing and rock climbing as a method of stopping ropes from running out of retaining devices. Like the overhand knot, which will jam under strain, often requiring the rope to be cut, the figure-eight will also jam, but is usually more easily undone than the overhand knot. Hyperbolic 3-manifold
In mathematics, more precisely in topology and differential geometry, a hyperbolic 3–manifold is a manifold of dimension 3 equipped with a hyperbolic metric, that is a Riemannian metric which has all its sectional curvatures equal to -1. It is generally required that this metric be also complete: in this case the manifold can be realised as a quotient of the 3-dimensional hyperbolic space by a discrete group of isometries (a Kleinian group). Hyperbolic 3–manifolds of finite volume have a particular importance in 3–dimensional topology as follows from Thurston's geometrisation conjecture proved by Perelman. In mathematics, a knot is an embedding of a circle into 3-dimensional Euclidean space. The knot group of a knot ''K'' is defined as the fundamental group of the knot complement of ''K'' in R3, :\pi_1(\mathbb^3 \setminus K). Other conventions consider knots to be embedded in the 3-sphere, in which case the knot group is the fundamental group of its complement in S^3. Properties Two equivalent knots have isomorphic knot groups, so the knot group is a knot invariant and can be used to distinguish between certain pairs of inequivalent knots. In mathematics, hyperbolic geometry (also called Lobachevskian geometry or Bolyai–Lobachevskian geometry) is a non-Euclidean geometry.
