Dauntless (board Game)
''Dauntless'', subtitled "Plane to Plane Combat in the Pacific — 1942–1945", is a board wargame published by Battleline Publications in 1977 that simulates aerial combat in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II. Description ''Dauntless'' is a tactical wargame for two or more players. One player or one team controls Allied aircraft, and the other player or team controls Japanese aircraft. Components and gameplay The board consists of six geomorphic mapsheets. Aircraft and ships are represented by 375 die-cut counters. The game uses a simultaneous movement system in which players log planned maneuvers and then simultaneously reveal them. The players use airplane data cards that list aircraft performance based on altitude. The rules are divided into a Basic Game and Advanced Game. ''Wooden Ships and Iron Men'' is a naval board wargame simulating naval combat during the Age of Sail that was published by Battleline Publications in 1974, then revised and republished by Avalon Hill the following year. Name The name should come from the phrase attributed to Austrian admiral Wilhelm von Tegetthoff about the battle of Lissa «Wooden ships commanded by men with iron heads defeated iron ships commanded by men with wooden heads», with which he wanted to ascribe the defeat's responsibility to the inept Italian commands, in particular to Carlo Pellion di Persano. The line of battle or the battle line is a tactic in naval warfare in which a fleet of ships (known as ships of the line) forms a line end to end. The first example of its use as a tactic is disputed—it has been variously claimed for dates ranging from 1502 to 1652. Line-of-battle tactics were in widespread use by 1675. Compared with prior naval tactics, in which two opposing ships closed on one another for individual combat, the line of battle has the advantage that each ship in the line can fire its broadside without fear of hitting a friendly ship. This means that in a given period, the fleet can fire more shots. Another advantage is that a relative movement of the line in relation to some part of the enemy fleet allows for a systematic concentration of fire on that part. ''Fire & Movement: The Forum of Conflict Simulation'' was a magazine devoted to wargames, both traditional board wargames and computer wargames. It was founded by Rodger MacGowan in 1975, and began publication the following year. In February 1982, Fire & Movement was acquired by Steve Jackson Games. In January 1985 the magazine was sold again to Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI). In 1988, World Wide Wargames (also known as 3W) acquired Diverse Talents Inc. (DTI), publisher of ''Fire & Movement'', '' Battleplan'' and '' Space Gamer'', leading to a complete merger of the two companies. 3W then continued on to publish four gaming magazines simultaneously. ''Perfidious Albion'' was a British board game and wargame magazine, published and edited by Charles Vasey and Geoff Barnard. History In the early 1970s, Charles Vasey, a chartered accountant and wargames hobbyist, began to write reviews of the games that he played for small games magazines such as ''Military Modelling'' and ''Strategy & Tactics''. Vasey and his acquaintance Geoff Barnard, came to believe that other reviews being published at the time were either too deferential to the major game publishers such as SPI, or were written for game designers and publishers, not for the consumers who were buying the games. When the 1975 publication of the popular wargame ''Tobruk'' by Avalon Hill resulted in more shallow reviews, Barnard convinced Vasey that they should create a zine dedicated to in-depth, objective and critical reviews of wargames. ''Moves'' was a wargaming magazine originally published by SPI (Simulations Publications, Inc.), which also published manual wargames. Their flagship magazine '' Strategy & Tactics'' (''S&T''), was a military history magazine featuring a new wargame in each issue. While S&T was devoted to historical articles, ''Moves'' focused on the play of the games. Each issue carried articles dealing with strategies for different wargames, tactical tips, and many variants and scenarios for existing games. As time passed, reviews of new games also became an important feature. While the majority of the articles dealt with SPI games, the magazine was open to and published many articles on games by other companies. ''The Wargamer'' was a magazine devoted to the hobby of board wargaming. Originally published as a British bimonthly magazine by UK Wargamers in 1977, it was subsequently published by World Wide Wargames, which then moved to the United States. The magazine ceased publication in 1990. History Keith Poulter, a political science teacher in England, became interested in board wargames in 1975, and decided to produce a wargaming magazine as a hobby. In 1977 he founded UK Wargamers (UKW) in order publish ''The Wargamer''. Like the American wargaming magazine '' Strategy & Tactics'' published by Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI), ''The Wargamer'' included a small pullout wargame in each issue. Kevin Zucker (game Designer)
Kevin S. Zucker (born June 26, 1952) is an American wargame designer, historian, author, and musician. SPI Kevin Zucker started playing board wargames as a teenager in La Jolla, California, and began to design his own games. In 1971 he found his first job in the wargaming world as co-founder and editor of the first two issues of ''Conflict'' magazine. Zucker then moved to New York to work for the wargame publisher Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI). Zucker worked his way up to Production Manager, and over two years, oversaw production of 24 issues of ''Strategy & Tactics'' plus the games enclosed in each issue, and 48 boxed games. OSG Zucker left SPI in January 1976, but stayed in New York and spent his time working in bookstores and studying music. The game has become very popular at gaming conventions in an oversized form, with -long boards and baseball-sized chariots. Description ''Circus Maximus'' is a chariot racing board game recommended for eight players. Players choose teams of horses and drivers, and race their custom chariots around an oval track. A board wargame is a wargame with a set playing surface or board game, board, as opposed to being played on a computer or in a more free-form playing area as in miniatures games.
