2001 Speedway Grand Prix Of Poland
The 2001 Speedway Grand Prix of Poland was the fifth round of the 2001 Speedway Grand Prix season (the world championship). It took place on 8 September 2001 at the Polonia Stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland. It was the 8th time that a Speedway Grand Prix of Poland had been held. The Grand Prix was won by the Australian rider Jason Crump (his 4th career Grand Prix win). Józef Piłsudski Stadium (Bydgoszcz)
Stadion Miejski im. Józefa Piłsudskiego (), also known as Polonia Bydgoszcz Stadium (), is a multi-purpose stadium in Bydgoszcz, Poland. It is used mostly for motorcycle speedway and association football matches and is the home stadium of Polonia Bydgoszcz speedway and football teams. The stadium has a capacity of 20,000 people and was opened in 1924 by List of Polish heads of state (1918–present), president Stanisław Wojciechowski. History The stadium has hosted the final of both the Speedway World Team Cup in 1995 and the Speedway World Cup in 2014. It has also hosted 16 Speedway Grand Prix events including the final of the 2008 Speedway Grand Prix, 2008 season which was actually run as the FIM Final Speedway Grand Prix. He is a multiple Speedway Grand Prix winner and World Team Champion. He also won a record ten Australian individual championships, four Australian Under-21 Championships and the 1992 Individual Speedway Junior World Championship. Career Australia Leigh Adams was a product of junior speedway in his home town of Mildura, which was also the home town of multiple Victorian and Australian champion Phil Crump who became his mentor. Adams started racing in 1979 and within a few years would prove himself as one of Australia's best junior solo riders. Brian Andersen
Brian Askel Andersen (born 13 March 1971) is a Danish former international motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 12 caps for the Denmark national speedway team. Career Andersen reached the final of the Under-21 World Championship in 1990. The following year, he won the championship to become the 1991 Junior World Champion. In the final he defeatied fellow Dane Morten Andersen in a run-off for the title after both riders had finished on 14 points. The success brought him to the attention of British leagues and Coventry Bees signed him for the 1992 British League season. He drove up his average over the following seasons for Coventry and established himself as one of their leading riders. In 1995, he won the Individual Speedway Danish Championship. Andy Smith (speedway Rider)
Andrew Smith (born 25 May 1966) is a retired motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned 29 international caps for the England national speedway team. Career Smith spent the first seven years of his career riding for the Belle Vue Aces from 1982 to 1988. He then joined Bradford Dukes for two British League seasons and began to build a reputation as one of Britain's leading riders. Smith also rode in Australia, including the 1990/91 Australian season when he based himself at Claremont Speedway in Perth, Western Australia. Despite Claremont being almost twice the length of most British tracks, on 18 January 1991 Smith defeated home town hero, and twice Australian Champion Glenn Doyle in the King of Claremont Classic. Piotr Protasiewicz
Piotr Protasiewicz (born 25 January 1975 in Zielona Góra, Poland) is a Polish international speedway rider. He is a four times World team champion and earned 24 international caps for the Poland national speedway team. Career Protasiewicz began his career riding for Falubaz Zielona Góra in 1991 where he would spend four seasons. He began to record some notable performances including reaching the finals of three Speedway Under-21 World Championship in 1993, 1995 and 1996. In the 1996 final he scored a perfect 15 point maximum to be crowned the World U21 champion. He rode for the Polish national team in the 1996 Speedway World Cup and in October 1997, during the Speedway Grand Prix Qualification he won the GP Challenge, which ensured that he claimed a permanent slot for the 1998 Grand Prix. Henka Gustafsson
Henrik Anders (Henka) Gustafsson (born 14 August 1970) is a Swedish former Motorcycle speedway rider. He won the 1993 World Pairs Championship with Tony Rickardsson and the Speedway World Team Cup in 1994 and 2000. He earned 50 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Gustafsson, rode for Indianerna in the Swedish Elite League starting in 1986. Gustafsson rode in the first of his four Speedway World Finals in 1990, despite failing to qualify for the 1990 World Final in Bradford, England, he got a lucky break when he replaced the injured Dane Jan O. Matej Ferjan (5 January 1977 – 22 May 2011) was a Slovenian motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 8 caps for the Slovenia national speedway team and 2 caps for the Hungary national speedway team. Career Ferjan was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was a five-time Slovenian Individual Speedway Championship winner (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and a six-time Hungarian champion (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). Todd Wiltshire (born 26 September 1968 in Bankstown, New South Wales) is an Australian former motorcycle speedway rider, who competed at the highest level of the sport, finishing a career best third in the 1990 Individual Speedway World Championship at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford, England. Niklas Johan Borje Klingberg (born 6 February 1973) is a Swedish former motorcycle speedway rider. He earned 11 caps for the Sweden national speedway team. Career Klingberg was a member of Sweden team at Speedway World Cups. He was Swedish Champion in 2002. Grzegorz Walasek
Grzegorz Walasek (born 29 August 1976) is a Polish motorcycle speedway rider who has competed in the Speedway Grand Prix series and earned 15 international caps for the Poland national speedway team. Career Born in Krosno Odrzańskie, Poland, Walasek began his senior career in 1993 with ZKŻ Zielona Góra, and won the Polish Under-21 Championship in 1997. In 2000, he began riding in the UK with Poole Pirates. In 2004, he won the senior Polish individual championship. He was part of the Polish team that won the Speedway World Cup in 2005 and 2007. Krzysztof Cegielski
Krzysztof Cegielski (born 3 September 1979 in Poland) is a former Polish speedway rider who was a permanent Speedway Grand Prix rider in 2002 and 2003 season. He earned five international caps for the Poland speedway team. Career Cegielski began racing for Gorzów during the 1996 Polish speedway season. He continued to ride for them before switching to Wybrzeże Gdańsk in 2001. It was also in 2001 that he rode for Poole Pirates in the British speedway leagues. The following season in 2002, he moved to Start Gniezno and Eastbourne Eagles respectively. In 2003, he was involved in an on-track crash in a Swedish League. The resulting spinal cord injury left him partially paralysed, and ended his racing career. He has remained close to the speedway world, acting as a speedway manager and expert.
