Matej Ferjan
Matej Ferjan (5 January 1977 – 22 May 2011) was a Slovenian motorcycle speedway rider who also rode for the Hungary national speedway team. Career Ferjan was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia. He was a five-time Slovenian Individual Speedway Championship winner (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001) and a six-time Hungarian champion (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009). In 1998, he won a third place in Individual U-21 World Championship. In 2004, he was second in the Individual European Championship. On 9 July 2000 he won the Continental Final, which formed part of the 2001 Speedway Grand Prix Qualification. He then secured a permanent ride in the 2001 and 2002 Speedway Grand Prixs. He was also the first non Polish rider to win the Polish Criterium of Aces, winning in 2007. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Gorzów Wielkopolski
Gorzów Wielkopolski (; german: Landsberg an der Warthe) often abbreviated to Gorzów Wlkp. or simply Gorzów, is a city in western Poland, on the Warta river. It is the second largest city in the Lubusz Voivodeship with 120,087 inhabitants (December 2021) and one of its two capitals with a seat of a voivode, with the other being Zielona Góra. The Mieczysław Połukard Criterium of Polish Speedway League Aces ( pl, Kryterium Asów Polskich Lig Żużlowych im. Mieczysława Połukarda) usually referred to as the Criterium of Aces (''Kryterium Asów'') is an annual speedway event held each year organised by Polonia Bydgoszcz. The Criterium of Aces is held in the Polonia Stadium in Bydgoszcz. It is seen by riders and fans as the official opening of the new season. Tomasz Gollob has won the event the most times by winning it on fourteen occasions. First staged in 1982, although a similar meeting was held in the 1951 as Criterium of Aces (''Criterium Asów''). The 2002 Speedway Grand Prix was the 57th edition of the official World Championship and the eighth season in the Speedway Grand Prix era used to determine the Speedway World Champion. Event format The system first used in 1998 continued to be adopted with 24 riders, divided into two classes. The eight best would be directly qualified for the "Main Event", while the sixteen others would be knocked out if they finished out of the top two in 4-man heats on two occasions - while they would go through if they finished inside the top two on two occasions. This resulted in 10 heats, where eight proceeded to the Main Event, where exactly the same system was applied to give eight riders to a semi-final. The semi-finals were then two heats of four, where the top two qualified for a final - there was no consolation final. The 2001 Speedway Grand Prix Qualification or GP Challenge was a series of motorcycle speedway meetings used to determine the 12 riders that would qualify for the 2001 Speedway Grand Prix to join the other 10 riders that finished in the leading positions from the 2000 Speedway Grand Prix. The format was similar to the previous year, in that 2 riders would qualify straight from the Intercontinental and Continental finals and 10 riders would qualify through the GP Challenge.
