He played in both legs of the UEFA Europa League first round against Atlantas and scored a goal himself, as HJK Helsinki won 3–1 on aggregate. However, Taiwo suffered an injury and was substituted in the 78th minute during the second leg of the UEFA Europa League second round, in a 1–0 win against Beroe, sending the club through to the next round. As a result, he was sidelined for two months. On 21 September 2016 Taiwo returned from injury against RoPS and set up HJK Helsinki's first goal in a 2–1 win. He then started in the final of the Finnish Cup against SJK and played 90 minutes before being substituted, as the club lost 7–6 in a penalty shootout following a 1–1 draw. Taiwo called time on his playing career with HJK Helsinki after their final league game against SJK on 23 October 2016.
