Gender neutrality (adjective form: gender-neutral), also known as gender-neutralism or the gender neutrality movement, is the idea that policies, language, and other social institutions (social structures or gender roles) should avoid distinguishing roles according to people's sex or gender. This is in order to avoid discrimination arising from the impression that there are social roles for which one gender is more suited than another. The disparity in gender equality throughout history has had a significant impact on many aspects of society, including marketing, toys, education and parenting techniques. Gender-specific Job Title
A gender-specific job title is a name of a job that also specifies or implies the gender of the person performing that job. For example, in English, the job titles ''stewardess'' and ''seamstress'' imply that the person is female, whilst the corresponding job titles ''steward'' and ''seamster'' imply that the person is male. A gender-neutral job title, on the other hand, is one that does not specify or imply gender, such as ''firefighter'' or ''lawyer''. California Assembly Bill 1084 (2021)
California Assembly Bill 1084 (also Britten's Bill) is a 2021 California statute requiring department stores in California to maintain a gender neutral children's section. It was passed by the California State Legislature and signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom in October 2021, and enforcement began in 2024. Purpose and history Bill 1084 was introduced to the California State Assembly by Assemblymembers Evan Low and Cristina Garcia on February 18, 2021. Similar bills had been unsuccessfully introduced in 2019 and 2020. The bill was signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newsom on October 9, 2021. At the time of its signing into law, Assembly Bill 1084 was unique to California; similar legislation had not been proposed in any other state. A gender role, or sex role, is a social norm deemed appropriate or desirable for individuals based on their gender or sex. Gender roles are usually centered on conceptions of masculinity and femininity.
