''Die Zeit'' (, "The Time") is a German national weekly newspaper published in Hamburg in Germany. The newspaper is generally considered to be among the German newspapers of record and is known for its long and extensive articles. History The first edition of ''Die Zeit'' was first published in Hamburg on 21 February 1946. The founding publishers were Gerd Bucerius, Lovis H. Lorenz, Richard Tüngel and Ewald Schmidt di Simoni. Another important founder was Marion Gräfin Dönhoff, who joined as an editor in 1946. She became publisher of ''Die Zeit'' from 1972 until her death in 2002, together from 1983 onwards with former German chancellor Helmut Schmidt, later joined by Josef Joffe and former German federal secretary of culture Michael Naumann. The paper's publishing house, Zeitverlag Gerd Bucerius in Hamburg, is owned by the Georg von Holtzbrinck Publishing Group and Dieter von Holtzbrinck Media. The paper is published weekly on Thursdays. ''Theater der Zeit'' is a German-language monthly magazine that focuses on theatre and politics. It was established in 1946 and is now—alongside ''Theater heute''—one of the leading magazines on theatre in the German-speaking world. In 1996, the Theater der Zeit publishing house began to publish books. History Following its establishment in summer 1945, Bruno Henschel & Sohn publishers (later Henschelverlag Kunst und Gesellschaft) commissioned journalist Fritz Erpenbeck to establish a magazine on theatre. In July 1946, the first issue of ''Theater der Zeit'' appeared. Max Reinhardt was on the cover, Erpenbeck's lead article was entitled "Zeittheater oder Theater der Zeit?" ''Zeit im Bild (ZiB)'' is the name for the television news broadcasts of ORF, running since December 1955. History The first ''Zeit im Bild'' was broadcast on December 5, 1955; two editions were broadcast that day, at 5pm and 7:30pm. The format of the bulletins was based on those at the time of the BBC, in which an in-vision presenter read out the day's news. The title ''Zeit im Bild'' (roughly, ''The Time in the Picture'') was thought up by the TV journalist and later ORF Director General Teddy Podgorski. From February 3, 1975, the news broadcast on ORF's first TV channel (FS 1) was renamed to ''Zeit im Bild 1'' at 7.30 pm and was supplemented by ''Zeit im Bild 2'' on the second channel (FS 2). The charitable foundation ''Zeit-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius'' (house style: ZEIT-Stiftung) is registered in Hamburg. Its aim is to fund projects in research and scholarship, arts and culture, as well as education and training. It was founded in 1971 by Gerd Bucerius and carries the name of the founder, the title of the weekly newspaper ''Die Zeit'', which he co-founded, and the nickname of his second wife, Gertrud Ebel, ''Ebelin''. Early projects of the founder The first scholarships in the 1970s were awarded to young journalists, to enable them to study at Harvard University in Cambridge/US as part of the ''ZEIT Fellowship'' programme. In the 1980s, Gerd Bucerius began to actively support stronger competitiveness in higher education in Germany, and gave substantial funds to the private University Witten/Herdecke.
