Wikimedian Of The Year
The Wikimedian of the Year is an annual award that honors Wikipedia editors and other contributors to Wikimedia projects to highlight major achievements within the Wikimedia movement, established in August 2011 by Wikipedia's co-founder Jimmy Wales. Wales selects the recipients and honors them at Wikimania, an annual conference of the Wikimedia Foundation—except in 2020, 2021, and 2022 when the recipients were announced at online meetings as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic. From 2011 to 2016, the award was named Wikipedian of the Year. History In 2011, the first title was given to Rauan Kenzhekhanuly for his work on the Kazakh Wikipedia. The following year, it was awarded to an editor identified as "Demmy" for creating a bot to translate 15,000 short English articles into Yoruba, a language spoken in Nigeria. Wikimania
Wikimania is the Wikimedia movement's annual conference, organized by Wikimedian, volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. Topics of presentations and discussions include Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, other wikis, open-source software, free knowledge and free content, and social and technical aspects related to these topics. Since 2011, the winner of the Wikimedian of the Year award (known as the "Wikipedian of the Year" until 2017) has been announced at Wikimania. Conferences 2005 :m:Wikimania 2005, Wikimania 2005, the first Wikimania conference, was held from August 4 to 8, 2005 at the ''Haus der Jugend'' in Frankfurt, Germany, attracting about 380 attendees. Ihor Kostenko
Ihor Ihorovych Kostenko (, ; 31 December 1991 – 20 February 2014) was a Ukrainian journalist, student activist and Wikipedian killed during the Euromaidan events. Biography Ihor Ihorovych Kostenko was born in Zubrets, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. He was raised by his grandparents, as his parents worked primarily in Saint Petersburg. As a child he attended Saint Josaphat Buchatskiy, a Ukrainian Catholic parochial school in Buchach. He had one sister, Inna. Kostenko received his bachelor's degree in 2013 and was a first-year graduate student in geography at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, in Western Ukraine. His thesis was the development of the tourism industry in Buchach. He also worked as a journalist for the online edition of the sports website ''Sportanalitika'' (''Sport Analytics''). Susanna Mkrtchyan
Susanna Mkrtchyan (, ; born 26 August 1949) is an Armenian professor of database and system research, PhD of technical sciences, Wikimedian. She founded and leads the Wikimedia Armenia chapter (2013–2020), which organizes outreach and workshops to improve the Armenian Wikipedia, including an annual conference. She conceived and turned into reality the vision of wikicamp and wikiclub projects, which were recognized as the coolest projects accordingly, in 2014 and 2016. During Wikimania 2015, she received an honourable mention in the context of the annual award Wikimedian of the Year attributed by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales. Olga Paredes
Olga Paredes (; born 1984), also known by the pseudonym Caleidoscopic, is a Bolivian architect and Wikipedia editor. She was named Wikimedian of the Year during Wikimania 2022 by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales. She was the first person from Bolivia to receive this award. Alaa Najjar (, ) is a physician, Wikipedian and Internet activism, internet activist. He was named the Wikimedian of the Year at Wikimania in August 2021 by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales for his pioneering role in the development of the Arab and medical communities as well as for his role in the development of COVID-19 topics. Najjar is an active contributor to WikiProject Medicine and a volunteer administrator in the Arabic Wikipedia and a Wikimedia steward. Sandister Tei ( ) is a Ghanaian media professional who was named the Wikimedian of the Year in October 2020 by Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales during Wikimania 2020.
