Walter Tranter
Walter Rogers Tranter (22 August 1874 – 14 July 1945) was an English footballer who played as a left-back. Born in Stockton-on-Tees, Tranter played as a left-back for Thames Ironworks, the team that would later become West Ham United. The club handbook described him as a player that "rushes in where others feared to tread". He was a part of the team that won the London League during the 1897-98 season, and captained the side to the Southern League Second Division championship in 1898–99. He then left to play for Chatham, but returned to the newly renamed club, along with teammate Albert Kaye, for the 1900–01 season. He played in the inaugural game for the new club, a 7–0 battering of Gravesend on 1 September 1900, and made a further three Southern League appearances for West Ham that season. Stockton-on-Tees
Stockton-on-Tees is a market town in County Durham, England, with a population of 84,815 at the 2021 UK census. It gives its name to and is the largest settlement in the wider Borough of Stockton-on-Tees. It is part of Teesside and the Tees Valley, on the northern bank of the River Tees. The River Tees was straightened in the early 19th century, so that larger ships could access the town. The ports have since relocated closer to the North Sea, and ships are no longer able to sail from the sea to the town. This is due to the building of the Tees Barrage, which was installed to manage tidal flooding. The Stockton and Darlington Railway served the port during the early part of the Industrial Revolution. The railway was also the world's first permanent steam-powered passenger railway. Alyson Jones (born 1956) is a British GP and former swimming champion. Biography She was born in Middlesbrough in north-east England and attended local schools. She began training as a competitive swimmer at local clubs such as Eston and Hartlepool, winning several titles in the Northumberland and Durham Swimming Association. In 1974, at age 17, she represented England at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand, winning a bronze medal in the 4×100 m freestyle relay. She won the 1985 British Championship in 50 metres freestyle and 100 metres freestyle. Following this, she ceased competitive swimming to study medicine at the University of Nottingham. Remarkably, in 1985 she returned to competitive swimming at the age of 28, gaining national ranking in freestyle. Thornaby-on-Tees, commonly referred to as Thornaby, is a town and Civil parishes in England, civil parish in North Yorkshire, England, north of York and south-east of Middlesbrough.
