The ''Varsity'' was a passenger train operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad (Milwaukee Road) over a 140-mile route between Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin. History and service The Milwaukee Road began operating trains that connected Chicago and Madison in 1927, a service which took the name ''Marquette'' a decade later, and initially ran between Chicago Union Station and Mason City, Iowa. An eight-hour, 384-mile run, it ran until 1951, when service was terminated between Madison and Mason City, and the train was renamed the ''Varsity''. In the beginning, during the days of steam, motive power would usually be the Milwaukee Road's 4-6-2 "Pacific" type locomotives. Varsity Cup Championship
The Varsity Cup Championship was an American college rugby competition established in 2012 to serve as an invitational championship following the breakaway of several schools from Division 1-A Rugby. The Varsity Cup was organized by United World Sport, the organization which also ran the USA Sevens tournament and the Collegiate Rugby Championship. The 2014 Varsity Cup final was televised by NBC Sports on NBCSN. The Varsity Cup's ability to get onto television was seen as a boost to the Varsity Cup and to the rugby programs of the member schools. The development of the Varsity Cup post-season tournament created some controversy. The Varsity Cup Championship did not replace Division 1-A Rugby, but it was endorsed by USA Rugby. Varsity Football is a South African university football competition. It is one of seven sports in the Varsity Sports series. The annual tournament involves the top football playing universities in the country, which belong to the University Sports Company. The tournament is run by Varsity Sports South Africa, and is endorsed by the South African Football Association and University Sport South Africa. Varsity Cup is the collective name for four South African rugby union competitions involving the top rugby playing universities in the country. It was launched in 2008, with eight teams participating in the Varsity Cup competition and each university's internal champions competing in the Koshuis Rugby Championships (now known as Res Rugby). In 2011, a second tier competition called the Varsity Shield was added, increasing the number of participating universities to thirteen. A Young Guns tournament for the Under-20 side of the Varsity Cup teams was launched in 2012. A further expansion for the 2017 season saw three additional universities added to the Varsity Shield, totaling sixteen teams. Its members all belong to the University Sport Company, and may each enter only one campus per competition, though they may enter different campuses for different competitions. The Varsity is a rowing regatta on the Amsterdam–Rhine Canal in Houten, Netherlands each Spring. The Varsity is the oldest and most prestigious student rowing regatta in the Netherlands. The Varsity is one of the few rowing races that is exclusive to students and a fever-pitch rivalry exists between participants. Traditional elements are combined with contemporary rowing races. For instance, while rowing crews defend the honour of the club on the water, spectators on the dike are traditionally brawling with equal fanaticism. The main event is the Oude Vier (Varsity Four, literally 'Old Four') which is rowed in a 4+ over a distance of 3 km. All other events row the standard 2 km distance in common race rowing classes such as the coxed four, 4+, coxless four, 4-, coxless pair, 2- and single scull.
