Varsity Football (South Africa)
Varsity Football is a South African university football competition. It is one of seven sports in the Varsity Sports series. The annual tournament involves the top football playing universities in the country, which belong to the University Sports Company. The tournament is run by Varsity Sports South Africa, and is endorsed by the South African Football Association and University Sport South Africa. The 2022 champions of the men's competition are TUT and UJ for the women's competition. TUT will face off against the UJ in the 2023 Men’s Varsity Football title on Thursday, 28 September, in Soweto. The North-West University (NWU) is a public research university located on three campuses in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark in South Africa. The university came into existence through the merger in 2004 of the Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, a large, historical university dating back to 1869, which also had a branch in Vanderbijlpark, and the University of North-West (formerly the University of Bophuthatswana). It involved some of the top football playing universities in the country, which belong to the University Sports Company. The tournament is run by Varsity Sports South Africa, and is endorsed by the South African Football Association and University Sport South Africa. The men's competition was won by UP-Tuks and the women's competition by University of Johannesburg. Three Points For A Win
Three points for a win is a standard used in many sports leagues and group tournaments, especially in association football, in which 3 points are awarded to the team winning a match, with no points awarded to the losing team. If the game is drawn, each team receives 1 point. Many leagues and competitions originally awarded 2 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, before switching to the three points for a win system. The change is significant in league tables, where teams typically play 30–40 games per season. The system places additional value on wins compared to draws so that teams with a higher number of wins may rank higher in tables than teams with a lower number of wins but more draws. Bidvest Stadium, is a multipurpose sports stadium in the Braampark, Gauteng, Braampark, suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. The stadium has a dedicated field to host football (soccer), football matches with a capacity of 5,000 seats, and other fields to host other sports disciplines. The exact location of the stadium, is at the University of the Witwatersrand, Wits University campus, and it was used as a home ground of Bidvest Wits F.C., Bidvest Wits in the Premier Soccer League.
