Trabzon Province
Trabzon Province () is a Provinces of Turkey, province and Metropolitan municipalities in Turkey, metropolitan municipality of Turkey on the Black Sea coast. Its area is 4,628 km2, and its population is 818,023 (2022). Located in a strategically important region, Trabzon is one of the oldest trade port cities in Anatolia. Neighbouring provinces are Giresun Province, Giresun to the west, Gümüşhane Province, Gümüşhane to the southwest, Bayburt Province, Bayburt to the southeast and Rize Province, Rize to the east. Aziz Yıldırım was appointed Governor of the province in August 2023. The capital of the province is Trabzon. Sumela Monastery
Sumela Monastery (, ''Moní Panagías Soumelá''; ) is a museum and former Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Greek Orthodox monastery in the Pontic Mountains, in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey. Nestled in a steep cliff at an elevation of about facing the Altındere Valley National Park, Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015, the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It reopened to tourists 25 May 2019. The monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon. Etymology The origin of the name of the monastery is disputed. Akçaabat is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 375 km2, and its population is 129,290 (2022). It lies on the Black Sea coast, to the west of the city of Trabzon. Ortahisar is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 235 km2, and its population is 335,628 (2022). The district and municipality Ortahisar was created at the 2013 Turkish local government reorganisation from the former central district of Trabzon Province. It covers the city of Trabzon and the surrounding countryside. On 31 March 2024, Ahmet Kaya ( CHP) was elected mayor. In April 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of Roman and Byzantine period archeological remains. The southern part of the wicker columns and fortifications of the Roman emperor Hadrian's period, trench walls of Byzantine period dating back to 1460 have been discovered. Remains of Roman tiles and pottery were also discovered during the excavations. According to the Trabzon City Municipality, the excavation area is planned to be turned into an open-air museum. Of (, possibly from ''Ophious'') is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 258 km2, and its population is 43,591 (2022). It is located in the eastern part of the province and is an important historical district of the province. The mayor is Salim Salih Sarıalioğlu ( AKP). Etymology There are several stories about the origins of Of's name. Of was called Ofis in 1910 by Pontic Greek speaking inhabitants. Çaykara (Pontic Greek#Ophitic, Romeika: Κατωχώρι, ''Kadahor'') is a municipality and Districts of Turkey, district of Trabzon Province, Turkey.
