Ortahisar
Ortahisar is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 235 km2, and its population is 335,628 (2022). The district and municipality Ortahisar was created at the 2013 Turkish local government reorganisation from the former central district of Trabzon Province. It covers the city of Trabzon and the surrounding countryside. On 31 March 2024, Ahmet Kaya ( CHP) was elected mayor. In April 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of Roman and Byzantine period archeological remains. The southern part of the wicker columns and fortifications of the Roman emperor Hadrian's period, trench walls of Byzantine period dating back to 1460 have been discovered. Remains of Roman tiles and pottery were also discovered during the excavations. According to the Trabzon City Municipality, the excavation area is planned to be turned into an open-air museum. Trabzon Province () is a Provinces of Turkey, province and Metropolitan municipalities in Turkey, metropolitan municipality of Turkey on the Black Sea coast. Its area is 4,628 km2, and its population is 818,023 (2022). Located in a strategically important region, Trabzon is one of the oldest trade port cities in Anatolia. Pelitli (literally "with Acorn") is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Ortahisar, Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its population is 23,314 (2022). Before the 2013 reorganisation, it was a town (''belde''). It is an eastern coastal suburb of Trabzon, situated to the east of Trabzon Airport. During the Ottoman era after 1461, Chepni people (a branch of Oghuz Turks) formed the original population of the settlement. Trabzon
Trabzon, historically known as Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. The city was founded in 756 BC as "Trapezous" by colonists from Miletus. It was added into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great and was later part of the independent Kingdom of Pontus that challenged Rome until 68 BC. Thenceforth part of the Roman and later Byzantine Empire, the city was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, one of the successor states of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Fatih Mosque, Trabzon
The Fatih Mosque (, "Conqueror's Mosque") is a mosque in Ortahisar district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. It was originally built in Byzantine times as the Panagia Chrysokephalos Church (, "Panagia the Golden-Headed"), serving as both the catholicon for the see of Trebizond, and a church for a monastery. It was built sometime in the 10th or 11th century. After Ottoman conquest of the city in 1461, the building became a mosque. The Fatih Mosque also displays the most beautiful samples of the Ottoman writing arts. History A number of churches are believed to have stood where the present structure now stands. During the heyday of the Empire of Trebziond, it was used as the resting-place for a number of dignitaries including Emperor John II Megas Komnenos in 1297, Metropolitan Niphon in 1364, and Emperor Alexios IV Megas Komnenos in 1429. Turkish Women's Handball Super League
The Turkish Women's Handball Super League () is the top professional league for Turkish women's handball clubs. It is administered by the Turkey Handball Federation, and the winners are recognized as Turkish champions. Established in the 1978–79 season as the Turkish Women's First League, it was renamed later to Super League. The current title holder is Muratpaşa Bld. SK (2011–12).
