Çukurçayır is a neighbourhood of the municipality and district of Ortahisar, Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its population is 33,438 (2022). Before the 2013 reorganisation, it was a town (''belde''). Ortahisar
Ortahisar is a municipality and district of Trabzon Province, Turkey. Its area is 235 km2, and its population is 335,628 (2022). The district and municipality Ortahisar was created at the 2013 Turkish local government reorganisation from the former central district of Trabzon Province. It covers the city of Trabzon and the surrounding countryside. On 31 March 2024, Ahmet Kaya ( CHP) was elected mayor. In April 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of Roman and Byzantine period archeological remains. The southern part of the wicker columns and fortifications of the Roman emperor Hadrian's period, trench walls of Byzantine period dating back to 1460 have been discovered. Remains of Roman tiles and pottery were also discovered during the excavations. According to the Trabzon City Municipality, the excavation area is planned to be turned into an open-air museum. Belde
Belde (literally "town", also known as ''kasaba'') means "large village with a municipality" in Turkish language, Turkish. All Turkish province centers and district centers have municipalities, but the Villages of Turkey, villages are usually too small to have municipalities. The population in some villages may exceed 2000 and in such villages a small municipality may be established depending on residents' choice. Such villages are called ''belde''. Up to 2014 the number of ''belde'' municipalities was about 1400. On 30 March 2014 by the act no. 6360 all villages (those with and without municipality) were included in the urban fabric of the district municipalities in 30 provinces. Thus ''belde'' municipalities in 30 provinces were abolished. The number of abolished ''belde'' municipalities is 1040. Trabzon
Trabzon, historically known as Trebizond, is a city on the Black Sea coast of northeastern Turkey and the capital of Trabzon Province. The city was founded in 756 BC as "Trapezous" by colonists from Miletus. It was added into the Achaemenid Empire by Cyrus the Great and was later part of the independent Kingdom of Pontus that challenged Rome until 68 BC. Thenceforth part of the Roman and later Byzantine Empire, the city was the capital of the Empire of Trebizond, one of the successor states of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade in 1204. In 1461 it came under Ottoman rule. During the early modern period, Trabzon, because of the importance of its port, again became a focal point of trade to Persia and the Caucasus. Sumela Monastery
Sumela Monastery (, ''Moní Panagías Soumelá''; ) is a museum and former Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, Greek Orthodox monastery in the Pontic Mountains, in the Maçka district of Trabzon Province in modern Turkey. Nestled in a steep cliff at an elevation of about facing the Altındere Valley National Park, Altındere valley, it is a site of great historical and cultural significance, as well as a major tourist attraction within Altındere National Park. Due to an increase in rock falls, on 22 September 2015, the monastery was closed to the public for safety reasons for the duration of one year to resolve the problem; this was later extended to three years. It reopened to tourists 25 May 2019. The monastery is one of the most important historic and touristic venues in Trabzon. Etymology The origin of the name of the monastery is disputed.
