Tim Newby
Timothy Michael Newby (born May 29, 1974) is an American writer and educator. He is the author of two books and his work has appeared in a variety of publications including Bluegrass Unlimited, Paste (magazine), RelixAmericanaUK Inside Lacrosse, Society for American Baseball Research, Slide & Banjo, and Honest Tune, where he was the Features Editor. Newby lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his wife and daughter. Overview Newby has written three books, 2015's ''Bluegrass in Baltimore'' and 2019's '' Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival!'', and his latest a biography on 19th Century baseball legend Pete Browning, which will be published in Fall 2024 by the University Press of Kentucky. The Phish Companion
''The Phish Companion'' is an encyclopedia about the band Phish. Three editions have been published: A first in 2000 by Miller Freeman, a second in 2004 (around the time of Phish's "breakup") by Backbeat Books (which bought Miller Freeman and was subsequently bought by Hal Leonard), and a third edition self-published in 2016. The ''Companion'' is produced by fans of the band, on a volunteer-basis and for charity, under the auspices of the nonprofit Mockingbird Foundation. Content has, in one edition or another, included song histories, setlists, reviews, statistics, essays, poetry, guest and sideshow info, an index of lyrics, interviews, and more. Ola Belle Reed
Ola Belle Reed (August 18, 1916 – August 16, 2002) was an American folk singer, songwriter and banjo player. Early life Reed was born Ola Wave Campbell in the unincorporated town of Grassy Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina, to Arthur Campbell and Ellen Campbell (née Osborne). She was the fourth of thirteen children. As a young child, Reed learned the clawhammer-style banjo and with her musical family sang old-time songs from the mountain region where they lived. Several family members on both sides of her family played instruments and sang. Reed's paternal grandfather, Alexander Campbell, played the fiddle. Her father played several instruments including the fiddle, banjo, guitar, and organ. Her uncle, Dockery Campbell, is credited with teaching Reed the clawhammer style. Bluegrass Music
Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that developed in the 1940s in the Appalachian region of the United States. The genre derives its name from the band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Like mainstream country music, it largely developed out of old-time string music, though in contrast, bluegrass is traditionally played exclusively on acoustic instruments and also has roots in traditional English, Scottish, and Irish ballads and dance tunes as well as in blues and jazz. Bluegrass was further developed by musicians who played with Monroe, including 5-string banjo player Earl Scruggs and guitarist Lester Flatt. Leftover Salmon is an American jam band from Boulder, Colorado, formed in 1989. The band's music is a blend of bluegrass, rock, country, and Cajun/ Zydeco. Over their thirty years as a band Salmon have released seven studio albums and three live albums. The band celebrated their continuing thirty-year career with the release of the biographical book, '' Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival!'' and a vinyl box-set re-release of all of their studio albums. The Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation and study of sound recordings. Established in 1966, members include record collectors, discographers, and audio engineers, together with librarians, curators, archivists, and researchers. WYPR (88.1 FM) is a public radio station serving the Baltimore, Maryland metropolitan area. Its studio is in the Charles Village neighborhood of northern Baltimore, while its transmitter is in Park Heights. The station is simulcast in the Frederick and Hagerstown area on WYPF (88.1 FM) and in the Ocean City area on WYPO (106.9 FM).
