In a road network, a concurrency is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. The practice is often economically and practically advantageous when multiple routes must pass between a single mountain crossing or over a bridge, or through a major city, and can be accommodated by a single right-of-way. Each route number is typically posted on highways signs where concurrencies are allowed, while some jurisdictions simplify signage by posting one priority route number on highway signs. In the latter circumstance, other route numbers disappear when the concurrency begins and reappear when it ends. In most cases, each route in a concurrency is recognized by maps and atlases. The Tennessee state routes do not follow a systematic numbering system unlike the U.S. Highway System and some other states' highway systems. The routes are separated into primary and secondary routes though. Many of the routes are hidden in that they are overlaid on U.S. Routes and not signed. The mile markers throughout Tennessee, however, show the state route number for these hidden routes. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) maintains these routes under the "State Highways" title of state law, but designates them as "state routes". An official alternate route is a special route in the United States that provides an alternate alignment for a highway. They are loop roads and found in many road systems in the United States including the U.S. Highway system and various state and county route systems. State Route 77 (SR 77), is an east–west state highway in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The route traverses the flat farmland of West Tennessee. Route description Dyer County SR 77 begins as a secondary 2-lane highway in Dyer County at an interchange with US 51/ SR 3 ( Future I-69) in Newbern. State Route 104 (SR 104) is a 114.43-mile-long east–west state highway in West Tennessee. Route description Dyer County SR 104 begins as a secondary highway in Dyer County on the banks of the Mississippi River. It goes east to have an intersection with SR 181 (Great River Road) before crossing over the Obion River to pass through Finley, where it has an intersection with SR 182.
