Strawberry (band)
Strawberry was a Canadian indie pop group formed on Prince Edward Island in 1993. Vocalist Deirdre Smith, guitarist Scott Garratt, and bassist Brian Arsenault comprised the foundation of the band. Other members, at various times, included Mike MacDougall, Pat Deighan, Craig MacPherson, Jon King, Roger Carter, Kieran Macnamara and Simon Moore. In 1994, they released a split-7" single with Plumtree on Cinnamon Toast Records. In 1996, the band signed to Janken Pon/Cargo Records. The label released Strawberry's "Into the Sky" 7-inch single that year. No Records released the band's only full-length album, ''Brokeheart Audio'', in 1998. Two cassette-only albums were self-released, ''Strawberry'' (1993) and ''Beached'' (1995). Prince Edward Island
Prince Edward Island (PEI; ) is one of the thirteen provinces and territories of Canada. It is the smallest province in terms of land area and population, but the most densely populated. The island has several nicknames: "Garden of the Gulf", "Birthplace of Confederation" and "Cradle of Confederation". Its capital and largest city is Charlottetown. It is one of the three Maritime provinces and one of the four Atlantic provinces. Part of the traditional lands of the Miꞌkmaq, it was colonized by the French in 1604 as part of the colony of Acadia. Indie pop (also typeset as indie-pop or indiepop) is a music genre and subculture that combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the style and tone of mainstream pop music. It originated from British post-punk in the late 1970s and subsequently generated a thriving fanzine, label, and club and gig circuit. Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic, less abrasive, and relatively angst-free. In later years, the definition of ''indie pop'' has bifurcated to also mean bands from unrelated DIY scenes/movements with pop leanings. Subgenres include chamber pop and twee pop. Cinnamon Toast Records
Cinnamon Toast Records was a record label from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It was inspired by the American label Simple Machines and was run by Walter Forsyth, Lee Ann Gillan, Shawn Duggan, Colin MacKenzie, Robert Jeans and Miroslav Wiesner. Born out of an influx of local alternative music being created in Halifax during the early 1990s, Cinnamon Toast Records released a number of limited 7-inch singles, each in a different colour. Cinnamon Toast Records' first single was a 7-inch pressing of the Halifax band Bubaiskull in 1992. Other notable releases are the first Jale single and a split pressing of Sloan and Eric's Trip in 1993, a Rebecca West CD in 1995, as well as a number of full length Plumtree CDs. Plumtree (band)
Plumtree was a Canadian indie rock/power pop band formed in 1993 in Halifax which consisted of sisters Carla and Lynette Gillis, Amanda Braden, Nina Martin, and later Catriona Sturton. The band achieved moderate success during their seven years of activity, completing several tours of Canada and parts of the U.S., as well as releasing three full-length albums, a six track EP, and various singles, before finally disbanding in June 2000. Their single "Scott Pilgrim" was the inspiration for the title character in the graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O'Malley. History The band formed in their hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia on April 9, 1993 after meeting through their music teachers.
