Serhiy Bashtan
Serhiy Vasylievych Bashtan (12 January 1927 – 10 January 2017) was a professor of bandura at the Kiev Conservatory. Bashtan was born in the village of Novi Birochky, now Velykyj Khutir, Cherkasy Oblast. (Other sources state that he was born in the village of Mykhailivka, Drabivsky region). He studied music at the Gliere Music College in 1948 under Volodymyr Kabachok and continued his studies in bandura at the Kiev Conservatory under V. Kabachok and M. Helis in 1959. In 1957 he won the gold medals at the All-Union Festival of Youth and Students in Moscow and also at the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students. He became an instrumental soloist of the Veriovka Ukrainian Folk Choir from 1959-1968. In 1967 received the title of Merited Artist of the Ukrainian SSR and from 1968 he has taught bandura at the Kiev Conservatory. Bandura
A bandura ( uk, банду́ра) is a Ukrainian plucked string folk instrument. It combines elements of the zither and lute and, up until the 1940s, was also often referred to by the term kobza. Early instruments (c. 1700) had 5 to 12 strings and similar to the lute. In the 20th century, the number of strings increased initially to 31 strings (1926), then to 56 strings – 68 strings on modern 'concert' instruments (1954).Mizynec, V. Folk Instruments of Ukraine. In the 19th – early 20th century traditional bandura players, often blind, were referred to as kobzars. A composer is a person who writes music. The term is especially used to indicate composers of Western classical music, or those who are composers by occupation. Many composers are, or were, also skilled performers of music. Etymology and Definition The term is descended from Latin, ''compōnō''; literally "one who puts together". Kobzars
A ''kobzar'' ( ua, кобзар, pl. kobzari ua, кобзарі) was an itinerant Ukrainian bard who sang to his own accompaniment, played on a multistringed bandura or kobza. Tradition Kobzars were often blind and became predominantly so by the 1800s. ''Kobzar'' literally means 'kobza player', a Ukrainian stringed instrument of the lute family, and more broadly — a performer of the musical material associated with the kobzar tradition. The professional kobzar tradition was established during the Hetmanate Era around the sixteenth century in Ukraine. Kobzars accompanied their singing with a musical instrument known as the kobza, bandura, or lira. Their repertoire primarily consisted of para-liturgical psalms and "kanty", and also included a unique epic form known as dumas. Kostantyn Heorhiovych Novytsky, better known as Kost' Novytsky ( uk, Костянтин Георгійович Новицький ) (December 26, 1950 in Kyiv, Ukrainian SSR (Now Ukraine)) is a Merited Artist of Ukraine and one of the more influential bandurists in Kyiv today. Biography Originally, he studied under Andriy Omelchenko and later at the Kyiv Conservatory under Serhiy Bashtan. After completing his studies, he was one of the founders of the pop group ''Kobza'' ( uk, Кобза) and was one of its soloists. Later, he formed a duo with fellow bandurist Volodymyr Kushpet. In 1985, Kost' Novytsky recorded a solo record of instrumental bandura music on the Melodiya label. In the late 1980s, Novytsky worked as an instrumental soloist with the Kyiv Bandurist Capella.
