Route Nationale 5 (Madagascar)
Route nationale 5 (RN5) is a primary highway in Madagascar of 402 km. The route runs from Toamasina to Maroantsetra, a city on the eastern coast of the Madagascar. The first 160 km until Soanierana Ivongo are paved and in good condition, but the remaining is unpaved and in a bad state of conservation. Several rivers must be crossed by ferry boats. The part from Soanierana Ivongo to Mananara Avaratra is scheduled to be paved in 2022. Maroantsetra
Maroantsetra , formerly Louisbourg, is a market town and domestic seaport in Analanjirofo Region, Madagascar, at the northern end of the Bay of Antongil. In 2018, Maroantsetra counted 42,529 people. Even though it is a small city, Maroantsetra played an important role in the Betsimisaraka history as the unification of this tribe by Ratsimilaho started there. Throughout the eighteenth century, Maroantsetra also actively participated in the piracy and the attack led collectively by the Betsimisarakas against the islands of Comoros and some east African countries. History Maurice Benyovszky arrived in Maroantsetra in February 1774. He established a colony here, which was named Louisbourg. A hospital was built as well as a quarantine post on Nosy Mangabe island just off the coast. Roads In Madagascar
The road network of Madagascar, comprising about 4,500 unique roads spanning , is designed primarily to facilitate transportation to and from Antananarivo, the Malagasy capital. Transportation on these roads, most of which are unpaved and two lanes wide, is often dangerous. Few Malagasy own private vehicles; long-distance travel is often accomplished in ('bush taxis'), which may be shared by 20 or more people. While most primary roads are in good condition, the World Food Programme has classified nearly two-thirds of the overall road network as being in poor condition. These conditions may make it dangerous to drive at moderate-to-high speeds and (bandit) attacks pose a threat at low speeds. Mahavelona
Mahavelona (commonly called Foulpointe), is a town in the district of Toamasina II, in the region of Atsinanana, on the northern part of the east coast of Madagascar. Geography It is situated at the coast of the Indian Ocean south of the mouth of the Onibe River. The town is located at 60 km north of Toamasina on the RN 5 between Toamasina and Maroantsetra. There is a reef around 150 metres out to sea which prevents waves hitting the beach; the waters by the shoreline are completely calm as a result. Rivers The Onibe river has its mouth at Foulpointe. Fenoarivo Atsinanana
Fenoarivo Atsinanana (French: Fénérive Est) is a city (commune urbaine) in Madagascar. It is the capital of the Analanjirofo region and of the district of Fenerive-Est. Geography It is situated at the East coast of Madagascar, about 103 km north of the city of Toamasina and 58 kms south of Soanierana-Ivongo along the National road 5 to Maroantsetra. Economy The region around Fenoarivo is one of the most important clove growing areas of Madagascar. The city is also one of the most important sea resorts at the East coast. History In the 17th century it was a privateer's harbour. Ratsimilaho, the first king of the Betsimisaraka, was the son of a pirate and a local princess. Ambatovaky Special Reserve
Ambatovaky Special Reserve is a tropical rainforest and wildlife reserve in the north-east of Madagascar (). It is designated by Bird Life International as an Important Bird Area for the large number of endemic species of birds. Geography This remote reserve ranges from the north-east coast of Madagascar to the Analamerana karstic plateau with elevations of in the Soanierana Ivongo District, Analanjirofo region. It is between the Marimbona river, which forms the southern border, and the Simianona river which forms the northern border. The reserve headquarters are in Soanierana Ivongo and the park is only accessible by canoe along the Marimbona River. Flora and fauna The reserve is mainly covered by dense deciduous dry forest and is the last place for the critically endangered lemur, Perrier's sifaka (''Propithecus perrieri'').
