''Portrait of Minerva Anguissola'' is a c. 1564 oil-on-canvas painting by the Italian painter Sofonisba Anguissola, now in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. Its subject is believed to be the artist's sister, Minerva Anguissola, not to be confused with her older sister Elena Anguissola who took the name of "Sister Minerva" upon entering holy orders at the convent of San Vincenzo in Mantua. In comparison, one can see Elena Anguissola, painted as a novice by Sofonisba Anguissola in ''Portrait of Elena Anguissola. Flavio Caroli, ''Sofonisba Anguissola e le sue sorelle'', Milano, A. Sofonisba Anguissola
Sofonisba Anguissola ( – 16 November 1625), also known as Sophonisba Angussola or Sophonisba Anguisciola, was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Cremona to a relatively poor noble family. She received a well-rounded education that included the fine arts, and her apprenticeship with local painters set a precedent for women to be accepted as students of art. As a young woman, Anguissola traveled to Rome where she was introduced to Michelangelo, who immediately recognized her talent, and to Milan, where she painted Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, 3rd Duke of Alba. The Spanish queen, Elizabeth of Valois, was a keen amateur painter and in 1559 Anguissola was recruited to go to Madrid as her tutor, with the rank of lady-in-waiting. The Pinacoteca di Brera ("Brera Art Gallery") is the main public gallery for paintings in Milan, Italy. Elena Anguissola
Elena Anguissola ( – 1584) was an Italian painter and nun. She was the sister of the better-known painter Sofonisba (or Sophonisba) Anguissola. Biography Elena Anguissola (who became a nun with the name of Sister Minerva) was the daughter of Amilcare Anguissola and Bianca Ponzoni. The spelling of the surname, in sixteenth century documents, varies between Angosciola and Angussola. Her parents were of noble origins. Her father belonged to the Genoese nobility and had moved to Lombardy. With his family, Amilcare Anguissola lived in Cremona, in a building on Via Pellegrino Tibaldi. He taught all of his children a humanistic culture, with readings of Latin and Italian texts, and painting for the eldest daughters Elena and Sofonisba, under the guidance of Bernardino Campi (1522–1591). The ''Portrait of Elena Anguissola'' (alternative name: ''Portrait of the artist’s sister Elena in the garb of a nun''), dated to 1551, is one of the earliest paintings by Sofonisba Anguissola. An oil painting on canvas, it is in the Southampton City Art Gallery, which acquired it in 1936. Description This portrait shows the nun Elena Anguissola, a novice with the name of Sister Minerva.
