Performance (film)
''Performance'' (stylised in promotional material as ''performance.'') is a 1970 British crime drama film directed by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg, written by Cammell and filmed by Roeg. The film stars James Fox as a violent and ambitious London gangster who, after killing an old friend, goes into hiding at the home of a reclusive rock star (Mick Jagger). The film was produced in 1968 but not released until 1970, as Warner Bros. was reluctant to distribute the film, owing to its sexual content and graphic violence. It initially received a mixed critical response, but its reputation has grown since then, and it is now regarded as one of the most influential and innovative films of the 1970s, as well as one of the greatest films in the history of British cinema. In 1999, ''Performance'' was voted the 48th greatest British film of the 20th century by the British Film Institute. Donald Cammell
Donald Seton Cammell (17 January 1934 – 24 April 1996) was a Scottish painter, screenwriter, and film director. He has a cult reputation largely due to his debut film ''Performance'', which he wrote the screenplay for and co-directed with Nicolas Roeg. He died by suicide after the last film he directed, '' Wild Side'', was taken away from him and recut by the production company. Biography Early years Donald Seton Cammell was born 17 January 1934 in the Outlook Tower on Castlehill, on the approach to Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. He was the elder son of the poet and writer Charles Richard Cammell (who wrote a book on occultist Aleister Crowley) and Iona Macdonald. Kenneth Colley
Kenneth Colley (born 7 December 1937) is an English film and television actor whose career spans over 60 years. He came to wider prominence through his role as Admiral Piett in the ''Star Wars'' films ''The Empire Strikes Back'' (1980) and ''Return of the Jedi'' (1983), as well as his roles in the films of Ken Russell and as Jesus in '' Monty Python’s Life of Brian''. Johnny Shannon
Johnny Shannon (29 July 1932 – 17 March 2017) was an English actor. Best known for his role as gangster Harry Flowers in the cult film ''Performance'', he appeared in numerous television and film productions over a 35-year period, often playing policemen or villains in crime dramas. Early life and career Johnny Shannon did not take up acting until he was in his late 30s. Previously, he had worked on market stalls in London and as a night driver for newspaper wholesalers. As a young man he had also been a talented amateur boxer in the heavyweight division. Allan Cuthbertson
Allan Darling Cuthbertson (7 April 1920 – 8 February 1988) was an Australian actor. He was best known for playing stern-faced military officers in British films of the 1950s and 1960s. Early life Cuthbertson was born in Perth, Western Australia, son of Ernest and Isobel Ferguson (Darling) Cuthbertson. He performed on stage and radio from an early age. During the Second World War, he served as a flight lieutenant with the Royal Australian Air Force from 6 December 1941 to 1 July 1947, including service with 111 Air Sea Rescue Flight. Stanley Meadows
Stanley Meadows (born 14 July 1931 in Stepney, London, England) is a retired British film and television actor. Meadows was the son of a shopowner in Stepney Green. He won a scholarship to Forest School, in Epping Forest, and eventually graduated from The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1955. After graduating he worked as a barman, storeman, waiter, and a shipping representative, while also performing in a variety of repertory companies. John Bindon
John Dennis Arthur Bindon (4 October 1943 – 10 October 1993) was an English actor and bodyguard who had close links with the London underworld. The son of a London cab driver, Bindon was frequently in trouble as a youth for getting into fights, and spent two periods in borstal. He was spotted in a London pub by Ken Loach, who asked him to appear in his film ''Poor Cow'' (1967). Ann Sidney (born 27 March 1944) is a British actress, television host and beauty queen who won the 1964 Miss World contest representing the United Kingdom. Early life Sidney moved to Poole when very young. She went to Martin Road School in Parkstone and then Martin Kemp-Welch secondary school, which later became St Aldhelm's Academy, leaving school at fifteen.
