The Moskalyev SAM-5 was a 1930s Soviet transport or air ambulance monoplane designed by Aleksandr Moskalyev. The type served in small numbers in the Second World War as an air ambulance. Moskalyev SAM-11
The Moskalyev SAM-11 was an amphibious version of the SAM-5bis-2, with a flying boat hull, retractable landing gear and raised engine and tail to avoid spray. Only one was built. Design and development Like the Moskalyev SAM-10, the wooden SAM-11 was a development of the SAM-5bis-2, sharing the same cantilever high wing and tail though with the tailplane raised well above the fuselage. The original SAM-11 was powered by a tractor configuration, 220 kW (300 hp) inverted, air-cooled, six cylinder inline Bessonov MM-1 engine in a nacelle above the wing on a central pylon. The amphibian had a two-step planing bottom of V-section, with the first step under mid-chord. The ''Illustrated Encyclopedia of Aircraft'' was a weekly partwork magazine by Aerospace Publishing (an imprint of Orbis Publishing) which was published in the United Kingdom (and sold in other countries too) during the early 1980s. The magazine was intended to eventually make up a multi-volume encyclopedia dedicated to aviation. First issued in 1981, the partwork comprised 216 issues, each of twenty pages (plus the covers), making up eighteen volumes (4280 pages). The first two issues were sold together for the price of one, subsequent issues were sold on their own. Empty binders for each volume (of twelve issues) were also sold. These binders were dark blue in colour and contained the imprint of a Panavia Tornado on the front. Design and development The Shvetsov M-11 was designed under a 1923 competition in the Soviet Union for a new engine to power trainer aircraft. It is a single-row five-cylinder air-cooled radial piston engine with aluminum cylinder heads. Like the American Kinner B-5 5-cylinder radial of similar size, the M-11 had individual camshafts for each cylinder, operating the pushrods, rather than a single central cam ring. Apart from having a more powerful engine, it was an updated and refined version of the original.
