Metus (fungus)
''Metus'' is a genus of three species of lichenized fungi in the family Cladoniaceae. The genus was circumscription (taxonomy), circumscribed by lichenologists David John Galloway and Peter Wilfred James in 1987, with ''Metus conglomeratus'' as the type species. All three species are found in the Southern Hemisphere. Galloway and James suggested a placement of the genus in Cladoniaceae, a classification (biology), classification that was later supported with phylogenetic analysis. Peter Wilfred James (1930–2014) was an English botanist and lichenologist. He was a pioneer in the study of lichens as environmental indicators, especially of atmospheric pollution. In biology, a taxon (back-formation from ''taxonomy''; : taxa) is a group of one or more populations of an organism or organisms seen by taxonomists to form a unit. Although neither is required, a taxon is usually known by a particular name and given a particular ranking, especially if and when it is accepted or becomes established. David John Galloway
David John Galloway , FRSNZ (7 May 1942 – 6 December 2014) was a biochemist, botanist, and lichenologist. Biography Galloway grew up in Invercargill. After graduation from Southland Boys' High School, he studied at the University of Otago. As an undergraduate he assisted James Murray, the first New Zealand lichenologist of the twentieth century, and this experience influenced the direction of his scientific career. There he graduated in 1963 with B.Sc., in 1965 with M.Sc., and in 1972 with Ph.D. — all three degrees in biochemistry. At the University of Otago, he was from 1963 to 1965 a fellow and tutor at Knox College and from 1965 to 1968 an assistant lecturer in biochemistry. In biological taxonomy, circumscription is the content of a taxon, that is, the delimitation of which subordinate taxa are parts of that taxon. For example, if we determine that species X, Y, and Z belong in genus A, and species T, U, V, and W belong in genus B, those are our circumscriptions of those two genera. Another systematist might determine that T, U, V, W, X, Y, and Z all belong in genus A. Agreement on circumscriptions is not governed by the Codes of Zoological or Botanical Nomenclature, and must be reached by scientific consensus.
