Meneñ Stadium
Meneñ Stadium, also spelled Meneng, is a former stadium on the island Nauru. It is located in the Meneng District. Constructed in 2006, it had a capacity of 3,500 spectators. Unlike other stadiums on the island, Meneñ Stadium had bleachers for spectators. History The area, a large empty sports field, was converted by the Australian Government into a containment area for asylum seekers under the Pacific Solution. At its place is the Nauru Australian Immigration Detention Center (Nauru Regional Processing Centre), which had a small soccer field in the facility. As part of Nauru's unsuccessful bid to host the 2017 Pacific Mini Games, the Meneng stadium complex was to be upgraded to include tiered seating for 10,000 spectators, reclaiming land that was previously damaged by phosphate mining. Meneng (or Menen) is a district located in the Meneng Constituency in the country of Nauru. The constituency elects 2 members to the Parliament of Nauru in Yaren. Geography The district is located in the southeast of the island, covering an area of 3.1 km². It has a population of 1,797. Meneng District has 18 villages, the most of any district in Nauru. Bleachers (North American English), or stands, are raised, tiered rows of benches found at sports-fields and at other spectator events. Pacific Solution
The Pacific Solution is the name given to the Australian Government, government of Australia's policy of transporting asylum seekers to detention centres on island nations in the Pacific Ocean, rather than allowing them to land on the Australian mainland. Initially implemented from 2001 to 2007, it had bipartisan support from the Coalition (Australia), Coalition and Australian Labor Party, Labor opposition at the time. Nauru Regional Processing Centre
The Nauru Regional Processing Centre is an offshore Australian immigration detention facility that has been in use from 2001 to 2008, from 2012 to 2019, and from September 2021. It is located on the South Pacific island nation of Nauru and run by the Government of Nauru. The use of immigration detention facilities is part of a policy of mandatory detention in Australia. The Nauru facility was opened in 2001 as part of the Howard government's Pacific Solution. The centre was suspended in 2008 to fulfil an election promise by the Rudd government, but was reopened in August 2012 by the Gillard government after a large increase in the number of maritime arrivals by asylum seekers and pressure from the Abbott opposition. 2017 Pacific Mini Games
The 2017 Pacific Mini Games were held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in December 2017. It was the tenth edition of the Pacific Mini Games, and the second to be hosted in Vanuatu (after 1993 South Pacific Mini Games, the 1993 games). Host selection Vanuatu was awarded the right to host the games at a September 2011 meeting of the Pacific Games Council's General Assembly. Nauru and the Northern Mariana Islands were the other countries to bid. The event was originally planned for September 2017 but preparations were delayed by Cyclone Pam. Denig Stadium
Denig Stadium is a soccer stadium on the island nation of Nauru. It is located in Nibok and has a capacity of 1,000 spectators. The stadium is at times unusable as it is also used as a storage area for shipping containers. History The stadium hosted soccer in Nauru until 2004, the last time an organized league was played on the island. The six-team league which played out of the stadium was dissolved after the foreign workers of the Nauru Phosphate Corporation left the country. The Nauru national soccer team played a friendly against refugees from the Nauru Regional Processing Centre at the stadium on 20 June 2014 in celebration of World Refugee Day. The stadium was proposed as a host venue in Nauru's unsuccessful bid to host the 2017 Pacific Mini Games. As part of the proposal, the stadium was to be resurfaced for rugby training.
