2017 Pacific Mini Games
The 2017 Pacific Mini Games were held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in December 2017. It was the tenth edition of the Pacific Mini Games, and the second to be hosted in Vanuatu (after 1993 South Pacific Mini Games, the 1993 games). Host selection Vanuatu was awarded the right to host the games at a September 2011 meeting of the Pacific Games Council's General Assembly. Nauru and the Northern Mariana Islands were the other countries to bid. The event was originally planned for September 2017 but preparations were delayed by Cyclone Pam. Both rounds of voting took place on the 4 September 2011 with Nauru eliminated after the first round. In the final round, Vanuatu edged Northern Mariana Islands by 4 votes to earn hosting rights. Port Vila
Port Vila ( ; ), or simply Vila (), is the capital of Vanuatu and its largest city. It is on the island of Efate, in Shefa Province. The population was 49,034 as of the 2020 census. In 2020, the population of Port Vila formed 16.3% of the country's population. Located on the east coast of the island of Efate, Port Vila is the economic and commercial centre of Vanuatu. The mayor is Jenny Regenvanu of the Land and Justice Party, the first woman to hold the position, elected in August 2024. Heimata Neuffer (died 13 November 2020) was a French Polynesian heavyweight boxer who represented French Polynesia at the Pacific Games. Neuffer was from Raiatea and worked as a police officer. The son of boxer Pascal Neuffer, he began boxing at an early age. In 2011 he was selected as part of the Tahitian team for the Cadet World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The following year he was sent to Los Angeles to train. At the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby he won gold in the heavyweight division. In 2016 he competed in the French Amateur Boxing Championships, losing in the final to Mickael Robert.
