Melancholy (Francesco Hayez)
''Melancholy'' is an 1840-1841 oil on canvas painting by the Italian artist Francesco Hayez, now in the pinacoteca di Brera in Milan. The artist describes the work in his ''Memorie'': The work was a popular success, leading Hayez to paint a second version, completed in 1842 and entitled ''Pensiero malinconico'' (''Melancholy Thoughts''). Hayez wrote in his ''Memorie'' that it had "many variations, changing the figure's character and adding flowers", reflecting the few but substantial differences from the previous work - the clothes are differently arranged, leaving the breasts more exposed and enhancing the poignant sense of abandonment, whilst the hands hang down rather than are intertwined and the face is more emotionally charged. The artist's treatment of flowers continued in his 1881 ''Vase of Flowers at the Window of a Harem''. Francesco Hayez
Francesco Hayez (; 10 February 1791 – 12 February 1882) was an Italian painter. He is considered one of the leading artists of Romanticism in mid-19th-century Milan, and is renowned for his grand historical paintings, political allegories, and portraits. Biography Francesco Hayez was from a relatively poor family from Venice. His father, Giovanni, was of French origin while his mother, Chiara Torcella, was from Murano. Francesco was the youngest of five sons. He was brought up by his mother's sister, who had married Giovanni Binasco, a well-off shipowner and art collector. Hayez displayed a predisposition for drawing since childhood. His uncle, having noticed his precocious talent, apprenticed him to an art restorer in Venice. Hayez would later become a pupil of the painter Francesco Maggiotto with whom he continued his studies for three years. Pinacoteca Di Brera
The Pinacoteca di Brera ("Brera Art Gallery") is the main public gallery for paintings in Milan, Italy. It contains one of the foremost collections of Italian paintings from the 13th to the 20th century, an outgrowth of the cultural program of the Brera Academy, which shares the site in the Palazzo Brera. History The Palazzo Brera owes its name to the Germanic ''braida'', indicating a grassy opening in the city structure: compare the ''Bra'' of Verona. The convent on the site passed to the Jesuits (1572), then underwent a radical rebuilding by Francesco Maria Richini (1627–28). When the Jesuits were disbanded in 1773, the palazzo remained the seat of the astronomical Observatory and the Braidense National Library founded by the Jesuits.
