Matt Simpson (poet)
Matt Simpson (13 May 1936 – 8 June 2009) was an English poet and literary critic. He published six full poetry collections, and after retiring from a senior lectureship in English at Liverpool Hope University, wrote numerous books of literary criticism. Life Simpson was born in Bootle, Merseyside, to a working-class family with a long seafaring tradition, and educated at Bootle High School, Bootle Grammar School. In 1955 he won a place at Cambridge University, Cambridge, where he read English. For some years after graduating he taught English to overseas students in Cambridge, where he met his German wife, Monika Weydert, and where his two children were born. In 1964 he returned to Liverpool. During 1994, he was poet-in-residence for six months in Tasmania, and in 1996 a ''festschrift'' edited by Angela Topping was put together to celebrate his 60th birthday, with contributors such as U. Matthew Simpson (born 29 August 1981) is a British racing driver most recently seen competing in the British Touring Car Championship. He debuted in 2016, after being double champion in the Quaife Intermarque Championship in 2013 and 2014. Racing career Simpson began his career in National Hot Rod in 2005, before graduating to the National Hot Rod European Series in 2006. He also raced in the National Hot Rod World Series that year. He went on to win the European series two times in 2009 and 2011, as well as finishing runner-up in the World series in 2008 and 2009. In 2013 he switched to the Quaife Intermarque Championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014. Matthew Simpson (born March 30, 1990) is an American goalball player. Simpson represented the United States at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and won a silver medal. He will represent the United States in the 2024 games in Paris. Early life When Simpson was about a year old, he began moving his eye in unusual ways. The doctors who first examined him believed it was a condition he would grow out of, but once he started sitting unusually close to the family television, his parents suspected a more serious condition. When he was 4 years old, he was diagnosed with a degenerative retinal condition that would eventually leave him blind. A Republican, he is currently serving in the New York State Assembly, representing the 114th district, which encompasses part of Essex and Warren counties, and portions of Saratoga and Washington counties. He is a member of the Republican Party. Early life and education Simpson was born and raised in Mobile, where he attended Murphy High School. Matthew Simpson (June 21, 1811 – June 18, 1884) was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1852 and based mainly in Philadelphia. During the Reconstruction Era after the Civil War, most evangelical denominations in the North, especially the Methodists, were initially strong supporters of radical policies that favored the Freedmen (former slaves) and distrusted the Southern whites. However, by the late 1860s in border state conferences, the MEC North moved well away from their work with the Freedmen's Bureau and often sided with the grievances of Southern white members. Bishop Simpson played a leading role in mobilizing the Northern Methodists for the cause. His biographer calls him the "High Priest of the Radical Republicans."
