Mary Mpanga
Mary Connie Livuza Mpanga is a politician in Malawi. She represents Phalombe South in the National Assembly of Malawi. Life Mpanga was first elected in 2009 and she became a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). She is a member of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus. Mpanga was an independent MP but following the 2019 election she was among a group of MPs including Naomi Phiri who agreed to support the Democratic Progressive Party. She represents Phalombe South in the National Assembly of Malawi. In 2024 she was an opposition MP when she was unanimously appointed to be a Parliamentary Service Commissioner. This was a sign of support as the same group had rejected fellow DPP nominated Lonnie Chijere Phiri for the same role. Mpanga's appointment made the commission to be 50% women. The National Assembly of Malawi is the supreme legislative body of the nation. It is situated on Capital Hill, Lilongwe along Presidential Way. The National Assembly alone possesses legislative supremacy and thereby ultimate power over all other political bodies in Malawi. At its head is the Speaker of the House who is elected by his or her peers. Since June 19, 2019, the Speaker is Catherine Gotani Hara. The 1994 Constitution provided for a Senate, but Parliament repealed it. Malawi therefore has a unicameral legislature in practice. The National Assembly has 193 members of Parliament (MPs) who are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple majority (or first-past-the-post) system and serve five-year terms. Democratic Progressive Party (Malawi)
The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a political party in Malawi. The party was formed in February 2005 by the then Malawian President Bingu wa Mutharika after a dispute with his party the United Democratic Front (UDF), which was led by him in a 2004 general elections and chaired by his predecessor, Bakili Muluzi. History The DPP party is an offshoot of the United Democratic Front. The UDF was formed by Bingu wa Mutharika and Bakili Muluzi and came to power in 1994 under Muluzi. After Muluzi's two terms were over, Mutharika succeeded him as head of the party and nation. However, Muluzi remained involved in running the party; therefore Mutharika formed his own party, the Democratic Progressive Party, in early 2005. Many UDF members defected to the new DPP party. Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus
The Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus is a cross party group of women who are members of Malawi's National Assembly. It was formed in 1996 when there were nine women members of parliament who wanted to work together across parties whenever there was an issue that was related to women. History In 1994, Malawi had a new constitution and democracy. The constitution was claimed to be one of the most "gender-sensitive" in the world. In 1996, there were nine women among the 177 members of Malawi's parliament. The idea of a women's caucus was put forward and the nine politicians put aside their party allegiances to work together. Naomi Phiri
Naomi Kilekwa Phiri (born 5 October 1984) is a Malawian politician. She is a member of Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus and she serves at the National Assembly of Malawi representing Mulanje South East. Life Kilekwa is a member of the National Assembly of Malawi for Mulanje South East. Her term began on 20 May 2014. She is a member of Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus and she has sat on the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee. In 2016 she donated money to support bee-keeping in her constituency. Lonnie Chijere Phiri
Lonnie Chijere Phiri is a Democratic Progressive Party Member of Parliament representing a constituency in Zomba in southern Malawi. She was the chair of Malawi's Parliamentary Women Caucus. Life She was a member of the Malawi's Parliamentary Women Caucus and in 2019 she and Liana Chapota came to Scotland for a week to meet Scottish parliamentarians. She chaired a fringe meeting at the 2019 Scottish National Party's annual conference in October. In 2021, she was the elected chair of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus, whose members are the women MPs who make up a minority of the male-dominated National Assembly. Lilian Estella Patel (born 2 February 1951) is a Malawian politician. She has represented Mangochi District, Mangochi South in the National Assembly (Malawi), National Assembly for the United Democratic Front (Malawi), United Democratic Front (UDF) since 2014 and previously from 1994 to 2009. She has served as a minister with a number of portfolios. In 2024 she was appointed as the Chair of the UDF. Roseby Gadama
Roseby Gadama became the Malawian member of parliament for Zomda Thondwe in 2019. She is the chair of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus and she sits on the Public Accounts Committee. Life Gadama was born in Mulanje in eastern Malawi. She became the member of parliament for the Zomba Thondwe Constituency in the 2019 Malawian general election. She wanted to represent the Democratic Progressive Party,but she stood as an independent after protests involving tear gasand gunfire during the primaries. Some would have preferred a male candidate and that is who won the DPP's backing. At one point,six car of police arrived, her car was hit with a bullet, but she had changed cars.
