Lonnie Chijere Phiri
Lonnie Chijere Phiri is a Democratic Progressive Party Member of Parliament representing a constituency in Zomba in southern Malawi. She was the chair of Malawi's Parliamentary Women Caucus. Life She was a member of the Malawi's Parliamentary Women Caucus and in 2019 she and Liana Chapota came to Scotland for a week to meet Scottish parliamentarians. She chaired a fringe meeting at the 2019 Scottish National Party's annual conference in October. In 2021, she was the elected chair of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus, whose members are the women MPs who make up a minority of the male-dominated National Assembly. The caucus were concerned that low ambitions and child marriage was endemic in girls in Malawi's primary schools. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is a centre to centre-left Taiwanese nationalist political party in Taiwan. Malawi
Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi, is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa. Zomba, Malawi
Zomba is a city in southern Malawi, in the Shire Highlands. It is the former capital city of Malawi. It was the capital of first British Central Africa and then Nyasaland Protectorate before the establishment of Malawi in 1964. It was also the first capital of Malawi and remained so until 1974, when Lilongwe became the capital. The Parliament remained even longer, until 1994. Liana Kakhobwe Chapota is a Malawian politician and educator. She became the Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation in Malawi Life Chapota was born in the capital city of Lilongwe and she was elected by the voters in the Lilongwe Msozi South constituency in 2019. The Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus is a cross party group of women who are members of Malawi's National Assembly. It was formed in 1996 when there were nine women members of parliament who wanted to work together across parties whenever there was an issue that was related to women. History In 1994, Malawi had a new constitution and democracy. The constitution was claimed to be one of the most "gender-sensitive" in the world. In 1996, there were nine women among the 177 members of Malawi's parliament. The idea of a women's caucus was put forward and the nine politicians put aside their party allegiances to work together. Mary Mpanga
Mary Connie Livuza Mpanga is a politician in Malawi. She represents Phalombe South in the National Assembly of Malawi. Life Mpanga was first elected in 2009 and she became a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). She is a member of the Malawi Parliamentary Women's Caucus. Mpanga was an independent MP but following the 2019 election she was among a group of MPs including Naomi Phiri who agreed to support the Democratic Progressive Party. Grace Kwelepeta (born ) became the Malawian member of National Assembly of Malawi for Zomba Malosa in 2019. She was a teacher and she takes an interest in education and in particular the education of girls. Life Kwelepeta studied linguistics and humanities and she trained as a teacher.
