Mantaray (album)
''Mantaray'' is the debut solo album by English singer Siouxsie. It was released in September 2007 by W14 Music on Universal Records, four years after the final album of the Creatures, '' Hái!''. After her first solo tour in 2004, Siouxsie wanted to collaborate with other musicians. She met Steve Evans and Charlie Jones, both of them arranged the songs and produced the record. Upon release, ''Mantaray'' was well received by critics, with praise focused on Siouxsie's voice and the different compositional styles. In May 2023, a newly remastered version of ''Mantaray'' will be reissued on CD. Background After the success of her first solo release, the live DVD ''Dreamshow'', which reached the No. 1 position in the UK chart in August 2005, Siouxsie received demos from several composers. Siouxsie Sioux
Susan Janet Ballion (born 27 May 1957), known professionally as Siouxsie Sioux, is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. She was the lead singer of the rock band Siouxsie and the Banshees (1976–1996). They released 11 studio albums, and had several UK Top 20 singles including " Hong Kong Garden", " Happy House" and "Peek-a-Boo", plus a US ''Billboard'' Top 25 hit, " Kiss Them for Me". Siouxsie also formed a second group, the Creatures (1981–2005). With the Creatures she recorded four studio albums and the hit single "Right Now". After disbanding the Creatures in the mid-2000s, she has continued as a solo artist, only using the name Siouxsie, and released the album ''Mantaray'' to critical acclaim in 2007. ''Boomerang'' is the second studio album by British duo the Creatures (a.k.a. singer Siouxsie Sioux and musician Budgie). The album was recorded in Spain with Mike Hedges, in Jerez de la Frontera, in Andalusia. It featured brass arrangements including trumpet, trombone and saxophone. ''Boomerang'' received widespread critical acclaim from British music critics, who praised Siouxsie's vocals and the choice of a wide range of musical styles on the album, including blues, jazz and Spanish styles such as flamenco. The album was later hailed by singer Jeff Buckley, who covered the song "Killing Time". Manta Ray
Manta rays are large rays belonging to the genus '' Mobula'' (formerly its own genus ''Manta''). The larger species, '' M. birostris'', reaches in width, while the smaller, '' M. alfredi'', reaches . Both have triangular pectoral fins, horn-shaped cephalic fins and large, forward-facing mouths. They are classified among the Myliobatiformes ( stingrays and relatives) and are placed in the family Myliobatidae (eagle rays). They have the largest brains and brain to body ratio of all fish, and can pass the mirror test. Mantas are found in warm temperate, subtropical and tropical waters. Bossa Nova
Bossa nova () is a style of samba developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is mainly characterized by a "different beat" that altered the harmonies with the introduction of unconventional chords and an innovative syncopation of traditional samba from a single rhythmic division. The "bossa nova beat" is characteristic of a samba style and not of an autonomous genre. According to the Brazilian journalist Ruy Castro, the bossa beat – which was created by the drummer Milton Banana – was "an extreme simplification of the beat of the samba school", as if all instruments had been removed and only the tamborim had been preserved. Cabaret is a form of theatrical entertainment featuring music, song, dance, recitation, or drama. WNYC is the trademark and a set of call letters shared by WNYC (AM) and WNYC-FM, a pair of nonprofit, noncommercial, public radio stations located in New York City. Portishead (band)
Portishead () is an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol. The band is named after Portishead, Somerset, eight miles west of Bristol, along the coast. The band comprises vocalist Beth Gibbons, producer Geoff Barrow, and musician Adrian Utley; Dave McDonald, an engineer on their first records, is sometimes cited as the fourth member.
