WNYC
WNYC is an audio service brand, under the control of New York Public Radio, a non-profit organization. Radio and other audio programming is primarily provided by a pair of nonprofit, noncommercial, public radio stations: WNYC (AM) and WNYC-FM, located in New York City. Both stations are members of NPR and carry local and national news/talk programs. WNYC reaches more than one million listeners each week and has the largest public radio audience in the United States. The WNYC stations are co-owned with Newark, New Jersey-licensed classical music outlet WQXR-FM (105.9 MHz), and all three broadcast from studios located in the Hudson Square neighborhood in lower Manhattan. WNYC-FM (93.9 MHz) is a non-commercial public radio station, licensed to New York, New York. It, along with WNYC (AM), is one of the primary outlets for WNYC branded programming provided by the non-profit New York Public Radio (NYPR). History Early years (1943–1994) WNYC-FM began regularly scheduled broadcasts on the FM band as W39NY on March 13, 1943, at 43.9 MHz, operating as the sister station to WNYC (AM). The station changed call letters to WNYC-FM later that year, and moved to 95.3 MHz in 1946, before settling on its cuirrent assignment of 93.9 MHz the next year. The Municipal Broadcasting System (which was renamed the WNYC Communications Group in 1989) helped to form NPR in 1971, and the WNYC stations were among the 90 stations that carried the inaugural broadcast of ''All Things Considered'' later that year. ''Radiolab'' is a radio program and podcast produced by WNYC, a public radio station based in New York City, and broadcast on more than 570 public radio stations in the United States. The show has earned many industry awards for its "imaginative use of radio" including a National Academies Communication Award and two Peabody Awards. HD Radio
HD Radio (HDR) is a trademark for in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcast technology. HD radio generally simulcast, simulcasts an existing analog radio station in digital format with less noise and with additional text information. HD Radio is used primarily by FM broadcasting, FM radio stations in the United States, U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Mexico and the Philippines, with a few implementations outside North America. HD Radio transmits the digital signals in unused portions of the same band as the analog AM and FM signals. As a result, radios are more easily designed to pick up both signals, which is why the HD in HD Radio is sometimes referred to stand for "hybrid digital", not "high definition". Brooke Gladstone (born 1955) is an American journalist, author, and media analyst. She is the host and managing editor of the WNYC radio program '' On the Media''. Early life and education Gladstone was born in Long Island, New York, one of six siblings. She grew up in Syosset, and attended Syosset High School.
