Mangpu
Mungpoo (also referred to as Mungpoo Cinchona Plantation, or rendered as Mungpoo) is a village in the Kurseong Vidhan Sabha Rangli Development Block in the Darjeeling Sadar Subdivision of the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal, India. History The ancient Incas, in what is now Peru, knew that the bark of a tree had miraculous property of curing Malaria. Carl Linnaeus established the botanical genus of Cinchona in 1742. Dr. Thomas Anderson, Superintendent of Royal Botanical Garden at Calcutta, started his experimental trial for cultivation of Cinchona in the Darjeeling Hills and in 1862 selected the Mungpoo hills for commercial cultivation. After successful establishment of Cinchona plantations at Mungpoo, it was extended to Munsong, Rongo, Latpanchar and Ambotia. Tindharia
Tindharia or ''Tindharay'' (English meaning: 'Three streams') is a village in the Kurseong CD block in the Kurseong subdivision of the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal, India. History It was developed for the purpose of a railway workshop for the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway or "toy train". "The construction work including rail track of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways started in May 1879 and completed from Siliguri to Tindharia in 1880. The Governor General of India, Mr. Lord Litton inaugurated the train running in March 1880". The workshop was built at the present location in 1881. It was built temporarily during the last part of the 19th century for the maintenance of locomotives and carriages and wagons of Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Longview Tea Garden is a village in the Kurseong CD block in the Kurseong subdivision of the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal, India. History Longview Tea Company was incorporated in 1879. In earlier days, Longview Tea Garden was owned by such companies as James Warren and Company. Another source says that that Longview Tea Estate was initially owned by a pioneering British tea planter C.G.Adams, who opened it in 1873. "Wyandhams of Australia owned the estate until 1953." Longview Tea Co. was taken over by the Dagas in 1954. The company started operations with a single tea garden – Longview Tea Garden. Takdah
Takdah Cantonment is a neighbourhood in the Rangli Rangliot CD block in the Darjeeling Sadar subdivision of the Darjeeling district, West Bengal, India. It is one of the upcoming tourist centres of the Darjeeling hills. Takdah literary means "always covered" in one of the local folklores, as it is often covered in fog. Roads that connect Takdah are in very bad condition. History Takdah Cantonment, as the name signifies, was a British cantonment before the independence of India. It was the destination for many British officers of high rank from all over India. After independence, like many other towns and villages, Takdah was abandoned by the new order. Maitreyi Devi
Maitreyi Devi (or Maitreyī Devī; 10 September 1914 – 29 January 1989) was an Indian poet and novelist. She is best known for her Sahitya Akademi Award-winning novel, '' Na Hanyate'' (). Biography Devi was born in 1914. She was the daughter of philosopher Surendranath Dasgupta and protégée of poet Rabindranath Tagore. She studied in St. John's Diocesan Girls' Higher Secondary School, Calcutta (now Kolkata) and graduated from the Jogamaya Devi College, an affiliated undergraduate women's college of the historic University of Calcutta, in Kolkata. She published her first book of poetry in 1930, at age 16, with a preface by Tagore. By this time she was already attending university, and that year the Romanian intellectual Mircea Eliade was invited by her father to stay at their house.
