Majken Christiansen
Majken Christiansen (born 14 September 1967) is a Danish jazz vocalist, known from several releases and jazz standard performances. Biography Christiansen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. She led the band Fjeldtetten, including Per Rick, Ebbe Lundgaard, Peter Reimer and Mogens Kann Fjelsøe, releasing several albums from 1992 onwards. After moving to Oslo she released ''Songs For My Father'' (2001), dedicated to her father, and ''Re:porter'' live at Herr Nilsen (2003) with Anders Aarum, Georg Michael Reiss, Jens Fossum and her husband Torstein Ellingsen, both on Hot Club Records. She also led the band Swing Society with Tore Sandnæs, Torstein Ellingsen, and Stig Hvalryg, also touring for Rikskonsertene in a show called «Ella Fitzgerald, the first lady of song». Her current Norwegian quintet comprises Frode Kjekstad, Ove Alexander Billington, Stig Hvalryg, and Torstein Ellingsen. Chat Noir
Chat Noir ( French for 'black cat') is a cabaret and revue theatre in Oslo, Norway. It was established in 1912 by Bokken Lasson. The current director is Tom Sterri. Establishment Chat Noir was established as a cabaret in 1912 by singer Bokken Lasson and her later husband, writer Vilhelm Dybwad, modelled after the Paris cabaret Le Chat Noir from the 19th century. During a visit to Paris in the early 1890s Bokken Lasson had found the inspiration of her life. She experienced the literary cabarets of the time, and performers such as Yvette Guilbert. The next years she toured European cities, wearing a self-composed costume, singing gypsy songs and playing lute, performing on the street, at restaurants, cabarets and occasionally in musical comedies. Chat Noir opened 1 March 1912 in the Tivoli building. Bokken Lasson managed the cabaret from 1912 to 1917. Ella Fitzgerald
Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917June 15, 1996) was an American jazz singer, sometimes referred to as the "First Lady of Song", "Queen of Jazz", and "Lady Ella". She was noted for her purity of tone, impeccable diction, phrasing, timing, intonation, and a "horn-like" improvisational ability, particularly in her scat singing. After a tumultuous adolescence, Fitzgerald found stability in musical success with the Chick Webb Orchestra, performing across the country but most often associated with the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. Her rendition of the nursery rhyme " A-Tisket, A-Tasket" helped boost both her and Webb to national fame. After taking over the band when Webb died, Fitzgerald left it behind in 1942 to start her solo career. Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and leader of his eponymous jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s and gained a national profile through his orchestra's appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. A master at writing miniatures for the three-minute 78 rpm recording format, Ellington wrote or collaborated on more than one thousand compositions; his extensive body of work is the largest recorded personal jazz legacy, and many of his pieces have become standards. Bodil Niska
Bodil Aileen Niska (born 21 August 1954 in Vadsø, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz saxophonist known for her recordings of jazz standards. Career Raised in Hammerfest ,she was taught music by her father, the accordion player Aksel Niska, and studied under the guidance of Kjell Bartholdsen, and ran the jazz club "Montenegro" (1979–89). After moving southward in Norway in 1990, Niska collaborated within the trio "Girl Talk" from 1992, the other members being Tine Asmundsen (double bass) and Elizabeth Walker. They recorded the album ''Talkin' Jazz'' (1996). She formed the Bodil Niska Quartet, including Per Husby (piano), Stig Hvalryg (bass) and Roger Johansen (drums), at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 2005. She is also known for her collaboration with Pete Brown Trio, including Scott Hamilton and Harry Allen. Niska has established the "Bare Jazz" store in Oslo, and a record label by the same name. Ove Alexander Billington (born 10 August 1979) is a Norwegian jazz pianist and composer, known as the band leader within his own Billington Trio and for his participation in bands such as Independent Jazz Orchestra, Speak Low, Mads Berven Quartet and Kjellerbandet. Early life Billington was born in Fredrikstad, Norway. He studied music on the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonsevatorium (2002). Later life and career While at university he started the Billington Trio including fellow students Andreas Amundsen (double bass) and Hermund Nygård (drums).
