K. G. Corfield Ltd
K. G. Corfield Ltd was an innovative camera and lens manufacturing company based in Wolverhampton. The company produced high quality cameras and lenses basing many design features on the Leica range of 35mm cameras. One unique design was employed in the ''Periflex'' series of cameras which utilised a novel periscope viewing system to achieve fine focus. A miniature periscope descended into the optical path of the lens when the film was advanced. This provided a much enlarged view of the central area of the film frame. When the shutter was released, the periscope sprung vertically up out of the optical path and then the horizontal cloth focal plane shutter operated. Kenneth Corfield
Sir Kenneth George Corfield (27 January 1924 – 11 January 2016) was a British camera engineer and industrialist. Born in Rushall near Walsall, Corfield attended the South Staffordshire College of Advanced Technology and worked in management development in ICI's Metals division from 1946 until 1950, when with his brother John he established K. G. Corfield Ltd in Wolverhampton. The company first made accessories for photographers, then launched the Periflex camera in 1953; it also imported Exacta Varex and Minox cameras from East Germany. After a majority holding in the company was bought by Guinness in the early 1960s, he led the expansion of Parkinson Cowan, a maker of gas meters and gas appliances. Corfield Periflex
The Periflex 35mm camera range was launched by K. G. Corfield Ltd, England in May 1953 with the "Periflex 1" . Subsequent models used the same general form and layout with improvements to the viewfinder design and surface finishes. The camera resembles the Leica Standard and qualify as a Leica copies, Leica copy. However, film loading is by way of a removable back. Focusing is provided through the lens using an inverted periscope lowered into the light path between the lens and the film allowing a small section of the full image to be viewed. The Periflex became quite popular in Britain and several improved models were introduced until their demise in the early 1960s.
