John Emory Powers
John Emory Powers (1837–1919) was a highly influential American copywriter. The world's first full-time copywriter, he worked for the department stores Lord & Taylor and Wanamaker's before becoming a freelancer in 1886. Regarded as the father of modern creative advertising, he was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 1954. Early life Powers was born on a farm in Central New York in 1837. He initially worked as an insurance agent, and then traveled to England to sell the Wilcox and Gibbs sewing machines. Powers pioneered the use of many new marketing techniques, including full-page ads in the form of a story or play, free trial uses of a product and installment purchasing plan. His campaign created a demand for sewing machines in the Great Britain that Wilcox and Gibbs could not meet. His son, John O. Powers (1868–1937), was born in England. After some years, John E. Lord & Taylor was an American department store chain founded in 1826 by Samuel Lord. It had 86 full-line stores in the Northeastern United States at its peak in the 2000s, and 38 locations at the time of its liquidation in 2021. The Lord & Taylor Building flagship store in Midtown Manhattan operated from 1914 until 2019, and was designated a New York City Landmark in 2007. The chain was owned by many companies in its existence, including Associated Dry Goods from 1916–1986, The May Department Stores Company from 1986–2005, Federated Department Stores from 2005–2006, NRDC Equity Partners from 2006–2008, Hudson's Bay Company from 2008–2019, and Le Tote from 2019–2021. Hyperbole (; adj. hyperbolic ) is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. In rhetoric, it is also sometimes known as auxesis (literally 'growth'). Caslon is the name given to serif typefaces designed by William Caslon, William Caslon I in London, or inspired by his work. Murphy Varnish Works
Established in 1865, Murphy Varnish Works was once the largest varnish-producing company in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The company was founded by Franklin Murphy, who later created the Essex County park system as a New Jersey legislator, and served as the 31st governor of New Jersey from 1902 to 1905. The company closed in 1950.
