Institute Of Molecular Biotechnology
The Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) is an independent biomedical research organisation founded by the Austrian Academy of Sciences in cooperation with the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim. The institute employs around 250 people from over 40 countries, who perform basic research. IMBA is located at the Vienna Biocenter, Vienna BioCenter (VBC) and shares facilities and scientific training programs with the Gregor Mendel Institute, Gregor Mendel Institute of Molecular Plant Biology (GMI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP), the basic research center of Boehringer Ingelheim. The Austrian Academy of Sciences (; ÖAW) is a legal entity under the special protection of the Republic of Austria. According to the statutes of the Academy its mission is to promote the sciences and humanities in every respect and in every field, particularly in fundamental research. Maria Leptin (born 15 September 1954) is a German developmental biologist and immunologist, and the current president of the European Research Council. She was the director of the European Molecular Biology Organization from 2010 to 2021. Education Leptin studied mathematics and biology at the University of Bonn and the Heidelberg University. Initially planning to become a teacher, she decided to pursue a PhD in 1979 at the Basel Institute for Immunology after a practical taught by researchers from the institute. Guido Kroemer (born 11 June 1961) is a cell biologist who has made contributions to the understanding of the role of mitochondria in cell death. He is a member of multiple scientific academies in Europe and is one of the most highly cited authors in cell biology. Biography Kroemer was born in Leer, Germany.
