General Security Service (Syria)
The General Security Service () is the main police service of Syria. It is charged with maintaining law and order, protecting life and property and investigating crimes. It also performs other routine police functions, including traffic control. History The General Security Service was the police force of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which controlled areas in Northern Syria replacing the Free Syrian Police before it was transferred to the interior ministry of the Syrian Salvation Government in April 2024. Its roots could be traced to 1945 when the Public Security Police was formed. A police academy was opened in September 2023 and produced its first batch of graduates in August 2024. The Ba'athist-led Public Security Police collapsed in 2024 with the fall of the Assad regime and flight of Bashar al-Assad. The Army of the Levant () identifies the armed forces of France and then Vichy France which occupied, and were in part recruited from, the Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon, French Mandated territories in the Levant during the interwar period and early World War II. The Ministry of Interior () is the interior ministry of Syria. Its headquarters were located on Kafr Sousa in Damascus. According to the Ministry official website, its tasks are limited to the protection and enforcement of security. The former headquarters of the Ministry of Interior was located at the Grand Serail which was established in 1900 near Marjeh Square. The building was transferred to the Ministry of Tourism in 2011 for use as a hotel. The Syrian caretaker government () was the provisional government of Syria. It was established in December 2024 by the Syrian opposition after the Syrian General Command appointed Mohammed al-Bashir as prime minister, replacing Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali on 10 December. This came after the fall of the Assad regime and the exile of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian Salvation Government (SSG) was a '' de facto'' unrecognized quasi-state in Syria formed on 2 November 2017 by Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and other opposition groups during the Syrian civil war. It controlled much of northwest Syria and had an estimated population of over 4,000,000 in 2023. Its ''de facto'' capital was Idlib.
