Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc., was a toy company headquartered in South San Francisco, California. They are best known for creating Micro Machines, which accounted for 50% of its sales in 1989, and distributing the Game Genie in the United States. History Lewis Galoob Toys was founded in 1957 by Lewis Galoob and his wife, Barbara Galoob, as a small distributor of toys and stationery. Galoob's first toy success was the reintroduction of a battery-powered Jolly Chimp, a cymbal-banging monkey toy that nodded his head when activated. The company was incorporated in 1968. In 1970, Lewis Galoob became too ill to continue as president, and his 21-year-old son, David, dropped out of the University of Southern California to take over the family business. Lewis Galoob (November 22, 1918 – August 4, 1971) was an American entrepreneur, inventor and the founder of Lewis Galoob Toys. Early life Lewis Galoob was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on November 22, 1918, as the third-youngest of seven children. His parents, Samuel "Sam" Galoob (1883-1973) and Sarah Leah Galoob (née Tarbis, 1887-1935), were both of Jewish descent, and originally from Russia and Germany respectively. He was married to his wife Barbara for 25 years. Career In 1954, Galoob founded Lewis Galoob Toys with his wife, originally as an import business. The California-based company later became a toy and stationery distributor. Later, after Lewis Galoob fell ill, the leadership of the Galoob business fell to their son, waterbed salesman David Galoob. The Game Genie was a line of Video game accessory, video game accessories that allowed players to alter codes transmitted between ROM cartridge, game cartridges and a video game console, known informally as a cheat cartridge. Developed by Codemasters and distributed by Galoob in the U.S. and Camerica in Canada, it debuted in 1990 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), with later versions for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Super NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis, and Game Gear. The device was central to the 1992 landmark case ''Lewis Galoob Toys, Inc. v. Nintendo of America, Inc.'', where the court ruled that Game Genie did not infringe on Nintendo’s copyrights, as it did not create a permanent derivative work or impact game sales.
