The genus contains two species, the type species, type ''Engleromyces goetzei'' (found in Africa and Asia) and ''E. sinensis'' (found in China), described as new in 2010. The genus was circumscription (taxonomy), circumscribed in Bot. Jahrb. Syst. Vol.28 on page 327 in 1900 by German mycologist Paul Christoph Hennings. Engleromyces Sinensis
''Engleromyces sinensis'' is a species of fungus in the family Xylariaceae. It was described as new to science in 2010, based on specimens collected in 1958 and incorrectly identified as ''Engleromyces goetzii''. The fungus is known only from China, where it grows on bamboo culm (botany), culms. It forms ascocarp, fruit bodies in the shape of two roughly circular buff (color), buff-colored lobes measuring up to in diameter that envelop the bamboo. ''E. sinensis'' has been used as a folk remedy against cancer and infection in Tibet, Yunnan, and Sichuan Provinces. Several biological activity, bioactive metabolites have been isolated and identified from the fungus. Discovery ''Engleromyces sinensis'' was described as a new species in 2010. Xylariaceae
The Xylariaceae are a family of mostly small ascomycetous fungi. It is one of the most commonly encountered groups of ascomycetes and is found throughout the temperate and tropical regions of the world. They are typically found on wood, seeds, fruits, or plant leaves, some even associated with insect nests. Most decay wood and many are plant pathogens. Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler
Heinrich Gustav Adolf Engler (25 March 1844 – 10 October 1930) was a German botanist. He is notable for his work on plant taxonomy and phytogeography, such as ''Die natürlichen Pflanzenfamilien'' (''The Natural Plant Families''), edited with Karl A. E. von Prantl. Even now, his system of plant classification, the Engler system, is still used by many herbaria and is followed by writers of many manuals and floras. It is still the only system that treats all 'plants' (in the wider sense, algae to flowering plants) in such depth. Engler published a prodigious number of taxonomic works. He used various artists to illustrate his books, notably Joseph Pohl (1864–1939), an illustrator who had served an apprenticeship as a wood-engraver. Paul Christoph Hennings (November 27, 1841 – October 14, 1908) was a German mycologist and herbarium curator. He discovered the study of cryptogams and mushrooms as a volunteer at the botanical garden. Although circumstances initially prevented him to study in that area, he later returned to natural sciences and eventually rose to a position at the largest herbarium in Germany. Originally interested in all non-higher plants, he specialised into mushrooms and became particularly versed in tropical species sent from abroad.
