Edgar Lewis
Edgar Henry Mead Lewis (12 February 1902 – 26 April 1992) was an Australian politician who was a National Party of Western Australia, Country Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1958 to 1974, representing the Electoral district of Moore, seat of Moore. Lewis was born in Fremantle, and attended Fremantle Boys' School. He left school at an early age to work as a farmhand, and in 1924 he and his brother purchased their own property at Miling, Western Australia, Miling. They eventually acquired another three farms, and Lewis became a member of various farming industry groups (including a director of what is now Wesfarmers). John Tonkin
John Trezise Tonkin (2 February 1902 – 20 October 1995) was an Australian politician who was the premier of Western Australia from 3 March 1971 to 8 April 1974. A member of the Labor Party, Tonkin was a minister in the Willcock, Wise and Hawke governments. He was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1933 to 1977, making him the longest-serving member of the Parliament of Western Australia as of 2021. Tonkin was born in the Goldfields town of Boulder, Western Australia, the eldest of three children. His family moved several times before returning to Boulder, where he attended Boulder City Central School and Eastern Goldfields High School. After several successive jobs, he graduated from Claremont Teachers College and became a teacher, mainly working in small schools in rural areas. 1974 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 30 March 1974 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The one-term Labor government, led by Premier John Tonkin, was defeated by the Liberal Party, led by Opposition Leader Charles Court. Overview The Liberal Party won the election after a campaign focused mostly on inflation, industrial unrest, states' rights and education. The outgoing Tonkin government had had a turbulent ride in its three years of office, having only a one-seat majority in the Assembly and being outnumbered two-to-one in the Council. 1971 Western Australian State Election
Elections were held in the state of Western Australia on 20 February 1971 to elect all 51 members to the Legislative Assembly and 15 members to the 30-seat Legislative Council. The four-term Liberal- Country Party coalition government, led by Premier David Brand, was defeated by the Labor Party, led by Opposition Leader John Tonkin. This was the first election in which no seats were uncontested since the introduction of responsible government in 1890. This was partly due to the Democratic Labor Party deciding to contest every seat up for election in both Houses. There was a large increase in the number of electors, because this was the first election after 18 year olds had been given the vote. Eastern Goldfields
The Eastern Goldfields is part of the Western Australian Goldfields in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia, covering the present and former gold-mining area east of Perth. Extent and name origin The region encompasses the towns of Kalgoorlie, Boulder, Coolgardie, Kambalda, Southern Cross and other smaller settlements within this area. The name is derived in two parts: ''Eastern'' in relation to its location from Perth, and ''Goldfields'' as the name suggests comes from the mining of gold in the region. Kimberley (Western Australia)
The Kimberley is the northernmost of the nine regions of Western Australia.
