Earl Woodyard
Earl Daniel Woodyard Jr. (June 17, 1946 – April 6, 2015) was a longtime Pittsburgh Police leader, who was appointed acting Pittsburgh Police Chief from September 29, 2006 – October 31, 2006, after the death of mayor Bob O'Connor. Woodyard’s career with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police spans 33 years during which time, he worked his through the ranks from uniformed officer to Deputy Chief. Woodyard’s first assignment was as a uniformed officer assigned to beat patrol, squad car, wagon patrol, and drug and gang suppression on Pittsburgh’s North Side. In 1983, he was appointed plainclothes investigator, assigned to the Zone One Station, also in the North Side. In 1987, Woodyard, was promoted to sergeant, assigned to Zone Two in the Hill District. Pittsburgh Police
The Pittsburgh Police (PBP), officially the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, is the largest law enforcement agency in Western Pennsylvania and the third largest in Pennsylvania. The modern force of salaried and professional officers was founded in 1857 but dates back to the night watchmen beginning in 1794, and the subsequent day patrols in the early 19th century, in the then borough of Pittsburgh. Robert E. O'Connor Jr. (December 9, 1944 – September 1, 2006) was an American politician who was the Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from January 3, 2006, until his death. Dominic J. Costa (born 1951) is a Democratic politician. He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, and was the Chief of the Pittsburgh Police in 2006, and was a 27-year veteran of the force. Nathan Earnest Harper is a convicted felon and former Chief of the Pittsburgh Police, a position he held from October 31, 2006, to February 20, 2013. Prior to this appointment he was the long-time "Assistant Chief in Charge" of the Investigations Branch. He is Pittsburgh's third African-American Chief of Police. Education and early career Harper graduated from Schenley High School and was a resident of Stanton Heights, he joined the police bureau in 1977.
