Doha Municipality
Ad-Dawhah (, ' or ''ad-Dōḥa'', ) is one of the eight municipalities of Qatar. It is the most populous municipality with a population of 1,186,023 in 2020, and is the municipality of Qatar's capital city, Doha. Etymology According to the Ministry of Municipality and Environment, the name "Doha" originated from the Arabic term "dohat", which means "roundness". This name is derived from the rounded bays surrounding the area's coastline. History In 1950, prior to the official establishment of Ad-Dawhah municipality, Phillip L. Plant, British adviser to the Emir, initiated the first municipal projects in Qatar. Starting with remodeling the old complex of the Old Amiri Palace, Plant then initiated the construction of a seaside road about a half-mile in length which opened up and made accessible the half dozen jetties along Doha's most built-up section. Municipalities Of Qatar
Since 2015, Qatar has been divided into eight Municipality, municipalities. In 2004, a new municipality, Al Daayen, was created under Resolution No. 13, formed from parts of Umm Salal and Al Khawr; at the same time, Al Ghuwariyah was merged with Al Khawr; Al Jumaliyah was merged with Ar Rayyan; Jarayan al Batnah was split between Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah; and Mesaieed was merged with Al Wakrah. In 2014, the western city of Al-Shahaniya split off from Al Rayyan Municipality to form its own municipality. For statistical purposes, the municipalities are further subdivided into Zones of Qatar, 98 zones (as of 2015), which are in turn subdivided into districts and blocks, the latter being the lowest subdivision. The Pearl Island () in Doha, Qatar, is an artificial island with an area of nearly . It is the first land in Qatar to be available for freehold ownership by foreign nationals. As of 2018, there were 27,000 residents. Umm Salal (; also spelled Umm Slal) is a municipalities of Qatar, municipality in the State of Qatar. Al Wakrah
Al Wakrah () is the capital city of the Al Wakrah Municipality in Qatar. Al Wakrah's eastern edge touches the shores of the Persian Gulf and Qatar's capital Doha is situated immediately north of the city. Governed by Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, it was originally a small fishing and pearling village. Over the years, it evolved into a small city with a population of more than 80,000 and is currently one of Qatar's most populous cities. Old Airport (; also referred to as Al Matar Al Qadeem) is an area of Doha, Qatar. The district is located close to the site of Doha's old international airport servicing Qatar before the construction of the Hamad International Airport. Running through the district is Al Matar Al Qadeem Street (known in English as Old Airport Street), around which many businesses and retailers cater to the residents of the area. Umm Ghuwailina () is a district in Qatar, located in the municipality of Ad Dawhah. Etymology The first word of Umm Ghuwailina is Arabic for "mother" and is used as a prefix to denote a geographic feature, while ''ghuwailina'' is a derivative of the name of a tree known locally as "ghulan". Rawdat Al Khail
Rawdat Al Khail (; also known as Al Muntazah) is a Qatari district in the municipality of Doha. It lies just outside the boundary of downtown Doha to the east. As part of the district's master plan, major mixed use developments are being carried along the arterial roads of C Ring Road and Salwa Road. History In early 1888, Doha (then Al Bidda) was raided in a surprise attack by approximately 250 Bedouins from Abu Dhabi during the Qatari–Abu Dhabi War. According to local tradition, Ali bin Jassim Al Thani (known as Joaan), the second son of Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, had been praying in the Old Amiri Palace at the time he learned of this invasion. Doha International Airport
Doha International Airport () is an airport in Doha, Qatar. It was Qatar's commercial international airport until Hamad International Airport opened on 27 May 2014. While all scheduled commercial traffic ceased, the airport site and existing runway are still used by Qatar Emiri Air Force, Qatar Amiri Flight, Rizon Jet, Gulf Helicopters and Qatar Aeronautical College.
