Chris M. Eckmann
Chris M. Eckmann (May 27, 1874 – January 21, 1937) was Mayor of Anchorage, Alaska from 1926 to 1927. Biography Chris Eckmann was born May 27, 1874, in Denmark. He worked in lumber in North Dakota before moving to Seattle to enter the furniture trade in 1906. He married in 1911, and in May 1915, moved to tent city at the site of what would later become known as Anchorage. He opened up a furniture store on the corner of Fifth Avenue and K Street, and worked for the Alaska Railroad as a clerk and a baggage handler. In 1923 he was elected to the Anchorage City Council, and in 1926 he was elected to a single term as mayor. He was elected to an additional term on the council in 1933. The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE; also often known as the Elks Lodge or simply The Elks) is an American fraternal order founded in 1868, originally as a social club in New York City. History The Elks began in 1868 as a social club for minstrel show performers, called the "Jolly Corks". It was established as a private club to elude New York City laws governing the opening hours of public taverns. The Elks borrowed rites and practices from Freemasonry. Membership Belief in a Supreme Being became a prerequisite for membership in 1892. The word "God" was substituted for Supreme Being in 1946. Will Clayson
Will Clayson (June 24, 1868 – September 28, 1950) was the fifth mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. Biography William H. Clayson was born in Port Gamble, Washington Territory to English immigrant parents, Edward Clayson and Annie Mary Quinton. By 1869, the family had settled in a logging camp near Seabeck, Washington Territory, where a sister, Esther, and a brother, Frederick, were born. The family moved to Portland in 1883, where another sister, Charlotte, was born. Will attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon. Charles W. Bush (October 17, 1881 – August 4, 1955) was the third mayor of Anchorage, Alaska. Biography Charles William Bush was born in Germany and immigrated with his family to the United States while he was still an infant. He came of age in Portland, Oregon where he worked as a clothing salesman. In 1905, he moved to Valdez, Alaska, where he operated a tobacco store with his sister, Emma. In 1915, he moved to the not-yet-incorporated city of Anchorage. It was about this time that a boy, Edward, was born to Charles and his wife, Dora. Fraternal Order of Eagles (F.O.E.) is a fraternal organization that was founded on February 6, 1898, in Seattle, Washington, by a group of six theater owners including John Cort (the first president), brothers John W. and Tim J.
