The Chief of the General Staff () is the head of the General Staff and the highest ranking officer of the Somaliland Armed Forces. He is appointed by the President of Somaliland, who holds the position of Commander-in-Chief and the head of the Somaliland Armed Forces. Hassan Yonis Habane
Hassan Yonis Habane () was a chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces. As one of the commanders of the SNM, the predecessor of Somaliland, he won many battles and was one of the initiators of Somaliland's independence. Biography He was born in Djibouti in 1950 to Yoonis Habane and Caasha Ismaaciil Madar. His clan is the Jibril Aboqor clan of Habr Awal. He studied at the elementary and secondary schools of Biyo dhacay in Hargeisa. He entered high school in Burao in 1968 and studied there for three years. At the same school was Mohamed Kahin Ahmed. In 1972 he joined the army in Kismayo and was sent to Russia in 1973. He studied at the Military University in Odesa, Soviet Union. He returned to Somalia in the spring of 1975. The Somaliland National Armed Forces (; ) are the military services of the Republic of Somaliland. General Nuh Ismail Tani () is the former chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces. He was replaced on 23 January 2025 by Lieutenant General Nimcaan Yusuf Osman (Gahnug). History Tani comes from the Sa'ad Musa sub-division of the Habr Awal branch of the Isaaq clan. In 1975, Tani was head of logistics for the Somali armed forces in Kismayo. Abdisamad Haji Abdilahi Diriye Warsame (), also known as "Gamgam", was a chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces. Biography He was born in 1945 in Sheikh. Osman Awad Hashi (), as known as Osman Dacas (), was 2nd chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces. Biography Osman Dacas is from the Habr Je'lo clan. Activities at SNM Osman Dacas was in charge of the eastern area during his Somali National Movement (SNM) days. He joined the occupation battle in Burco.
