Nimcaan Yusuf Osman
Brigadier General Nimcaan Yusuf Osman (, ) nicknamed ''Gahnug'' (), is a Somaliland military officer serving as the Chief of the General Staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces since January 23, 2025. Appointed by president Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (''Irro''), he is the youngest officer to hold this position in Somaliland's history. Early life and education Nimcaan Yusuf Osman was born in 1985 in Hargeisa, Somaliland, where he completed his primary education. He is from the Arap branch of the Isaaq clan. He joined the military at a young age. He holds a bachelor’s degree in military science from an Ethiopian institution and a master’s degree in the same field from the University of Kuala Lumpur, specializing in International Security and Military Leadership. Hargeisa
Hargeisa ( ; ; ) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Somaliland, a ''List of states with limited recognition, de facto'' sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, still considered internationally to be part of Somalia. It is also the regional capital of the Maroodi Jeex region of Somaliland. Hargeisa was founded as a watering and trading stop between the coast and the interior by the Isaaq Sultanate. The Arap or Arab (, , Full Name: ''Muḥammad ibn ash-Shaykh Isḥāq ibn Aḥmad bin al-Ḥusayn al-Hāshimīy'') clan is a major Northern Somali clan of the wider Isaaq clan family. The Arap predominantly live on the middle and southwest side of Hargeisa. General Nuh Ismail Tani () is the former chief of staff of the Somaliland Armed Forces. He was replaced on 23 January 2025 by Lieutenant General Nimcaan Yusuf Osman (Gahnug). History Tani comes from the Sa'ad Musa sub-division of the Habr Awal branch of the Isaaq clan. In 1975, Tani was head of logistics for the Somali armed forces in Kismayo. Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (, ; 1 June 1938 – 15 November 2024), known by his nickname Silanyo (), was a Somaliland politician who served as the President of Somaliland from 2010 to 2017. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (, ; born 24 April 1956), colloquially known as Irro (), is a Somaliland politician and diplomat who has been the 6th and current President of Somaliland since 12 December 2024.
