Botryotrichum Murorum
''Botryotrichum murorum'' is a common soil and indoor fungus resembling members of the genus ''Chaetomium''. The fungus has no known asexual state, and unlike many related fungi, is intolerant of high heat exhibiting limited growth when incubated at temperatures over 35 °C. In rare cases, the fungus is an opportunistic pathogen of marine animals and humans causing cutaneous and subcutaneous infection. Taxonomy and discovery ''Chaetomium murorum'' was first discovered by August Carl Joseph Corda in 1837 when he sampled the fungus from a wall in Prague. The Latin name "''murorum''" means "wall". In 2016 X. W. Wang et al. re-examined a set of cultures of ''Chaetomium''-like fungi using phylogenetic analysis of the DNA directed RNA polymerase II subunit gene sequence. August Carl Joseph Corda (1809–1849) was a Czech physician and mycologist. This botanist is denoted by the author abbreviation when citing a botanical name. Early life and education Corda was born in Reichenberg (now Liberec), Bohemia on November 15, 1809. Corda's father was a textile seller. Both of Corda's parents died suddenly only a few weeks following his birth, and Corda was raised by his grandmother, attending the Normale School in Reichenberg. Corda's grandmother died in 1819 and Corda was sent to live with an "unacquainted family" for two years during which time he did not receive schooling. Two years later, Corda was transferred to the care of an uncle in Prague where he attended the "Lyceum of New Prague". ''Chaetomium'' is a genus of fungi in the Chaetomiaceae family. It is a dematiaceous (dark-walled) mold normally found in soil, air, cellulose and plant debris. According to the ''Dictionary of the Fungi'' (10th edition, 2008), there are about 95 species in the widespread genus. In 1817 Gustav Kunze established the genus ''Chaetomium'' (the plume of the helmet) to classify the species ''C. globosum'' and ''C. elatum''. No further contributions to the genus were made until 1837 when the publication of Corda described its characteristic asci in his work, ''Icones Fungorum Hucusque Cognitorum''. The order Sordariales is one of the most diverse taxonomic groups within the Sordariomycetes (subdivision Pezizomycotina, division Ascomycota). Species in the order Sordariales have a broad range of ecological diversity, containing lignicolous, herbicolous and coprophilous taxa. Most Sordariales are saprobic, producing solitary perithecial ascomata. They are commonly found on dung or decaying plant matter.
