Borders Distillery
The Borders distillery, is a malt whisky, gin and vodka production facility in the Scottish Borders town of Hawick. The distillery produces malt whisky, William Kerrs Gin. and vodka and has a visitor centre on Commercial Road. History The Borders distillery is the first Scotch Whisky distillery in the Scottish Borders since 1837, becoming operational in March 2018 and opening to the public on 1 May 2018. The distillery is in a landmark building in the centre of town, having previously been the site of the Hawick Electric Company and several engineering businesses. The distillery takes the form of two large sheds, dating from the 1880s joined by a modern glass extension to a Tudor Cotswold building. Products The hosts two wash stills, two spirit stills and a specially commissioned Carter Head still, made by Forsyths of Rothes. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is a non-departmental public body in the United Kingdom sponsored by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. William Kerr (gardener)
William Kerr (died 1814) was a Scottish gardener and plant hunter, the first Western professional full-time plant collector active in China. He also collected in Java and Luzon in the Philippines. Among the plants he sent back to Kew Gardens was the vigorous shrub, at first cosseted in greenhouses, named in his honour, '' Kerria''. Kerr sent back to Britain examples of 238 plants new to European gardeners and to science, without, it appears, stirring far from the European trading sites of Canton and Macao, or Manila. A native of Hawick in the Scottish Borders, he was a gardener at Kew, where he was noted by Sir Joseph Banks, and, following instruction by Banks, sent to China in 1804. He remained eight years. A column still, also called a continuous still, patent still or Coffey still is a variety of still consisting of two columns. Column stills can produce rectified spirit (95% ABV). Description The first column (called the analyzer) in a column still has steam rising and wash descending through several levels. The second column (called the rectifier) carries the alcohol from the wash, where it circulates until it can condense at the required strength.
