''Birthmarks'' is the fifth studio album by American post-punk band Bambara. It was released on March 14, 2025, by Bella Union and Wharf Cat Records. Produced by Graham Sutton, ''Birthmarks'' is the band's first release since its 2022 EP ''Love On My Mind'', and its first full-length album ''Stray'' in 2020. Reception AllMusic gave the album a rating of 3.5 out of five and stated "there is more of a conceptual storyline to this album, involving a character named Elena and the man who murdered her boyfriend." ''Louder Than War'' referred to it as "possibly their most accessible album to date, full of gothic post punk drama from the Bateh brothers," and assigned it a rating of 4.5 out of five, while ''DIY Magazine'' rated it three stars, noting "much of ''Birthmarks'' instead appears confusing, unable to find its groove. Bambara (band)
Bambara is an American post-punk band formed in 2007 in Athens, Georgia, currently based in Brooklyn, New York. The trio consists of twin brothers Reid Bateh (lead vocals, guitar) and Blaze Bateh (drums), and William Brookshire (bass). The band is named after the character of the same name from the animated television series '' Æon Flux''. Drummer Blaze Bateh stated that "honestly there wasn’t anything in particular about him as a character that drove us to use his name. We were just huge fans of the show. I’ve watched the show start to finish countless times and I still get blown away by aspects of it. But yeah, we just thought his name sounded really cool". Bella Union
Bella Union is a British independent record label founded in 1997 by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie of Cocteau Twins. It is now run solely by Raymonde. History After releasing records with 4AD for a large part of their career, Cocteau Twins decided to start up the Bella Union record label in 1997, through which they could release their own work as well as any collaborative efforts. The band had a difficult relationship with 4AD founder Ivo Watts-Russell and also regretted signing with Universal Music Group's Mercury Records. The band split up not long after, but instead of letting the newly formed label go under, Robin Guthrie, Simon Raymonde and their former manager Fiona Glyn-Jones decided to take charge of it. Graham Sutton (musician)
Graham Sutton (born 1972) is an English musician and record producer based in London Borough of Hackney, Hackney, UK. He is best known as the leader and key figure of seminal post-rock band Bark Psychosis, as well as being a producer for alternative rock bands since the late 1990s. Personal projects Bark Psychosis Sutton first came to attention as the main figure in the band Bark Psychosis in which he played guitar, sampler and assorted keyboards as well as handling lead vocals where necessary.
